The cost of running for state office is not getting any cheaper. From the Herald Tribune:
For House candidates, the average expenditure was about $94,000 for a job that pays just less than $30,000 a year.
For the Senate candidates, the average campaign cost about $238,000. Senators also make less than $30,000 a year.
Who paid the most?
Senate President Jeff Atwater, a Republican representing parts of Broward and Palm Beach County, who spent $2.5 million.
Sen. Nancy Detert’s win in Sarasota looks like a bargain by comparison. The Venice Republican spent $374,000.
