From the Concord Monitor:
The New Hampshire House yesterday backed a plan to nearly double the state’s gas tax over the next three years – adding 15 cents a gallon to the current 19.6-cent levy – in an effort to fill up the state’s near-broke highway fund with money that backers said will create jobs and allow the state to maintain its aging road system.
The measure passed the House 190-162 largely along party lines, with most Democrats voting yes and all but a dozen Republicans voting no. Opponents largely agreed that the state’s roads are in rough shape but said the poor economy makes a tax increase too difficult to bear.
