As a purely political exercise, most lawmakers and experts agreed, it’s one ugly budget. And Corzine didn’t deny it. Even his allies acknowledge that the governor now has to come up with a masterful sales job — and this is a governor who’s an admittedly bad communicator.
“He’s got to sell the message that he made the hard decisions and made the right decisions,” Senate President Richard Codey (D-Essex) said. “He doesn’t like the plan. But having said that, he’s got to say, ‘I’m the governor, I’m taking responsibility. I don’t like it, you don’t like it. But what does a leader do?'”
