From LaCrosseTribune:
Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen pushed back against Gov. Jim Doyle’s plan to pull millions from law enforcement to help balance the state budget Monday.
Van Hollen, a Republican, said the governor should protect public safety, not dismantle it. He sent a letter to Doyle and the Legislature’s finance committee co-chairs complaining about more than a dozen criminal justice reductions and changes he has proposed. The letter asked legislators to “cure these oversights” before they pass the budget.
Van Hollen accused Doyle, a Democrat, in an interview of avoiding tough decisions as he grapples with the state’s $5.7 billion deficit.“There are very, very few programs more important than our various public safety initiatives. And so if you ask me what should be cut to make sure public safety isn’t, I would submit to you anything,” Van Hollen said.
