We reported earlier on the increase in online crime. Wouldn’t be nice to get some of the money you lost as a result of identity fraud back…from the person who stole your identity? From The Daily Review:
“As a former victim of identity theft, I know how important this legislation is to victims of crime,” Baker said. “This legislation will help future victims of identity theft recover costs and expenses incurred to restore his or her identity.”
House Bill 222 allows an identity theft victim to receive restitution from their convicted perpetrator for expenses relating to investigating the theft, bringing or defending any civil or criminal action, or to making any other efforts to correct a victim’s credit rating or report.
The types of fees recoverable include, but are not limited to: fees for attorneys or accountants, fees and costs incurred in disputing or correcting credit records or reports, and court costs.
