From PoliticsPA:
If Ridge ran, the four men mentioned for the race — U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach, former Lieutenant Governor Bill Scranton, Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi and Lieutenant Governor Joe Scarnati – would likely have stepped aside. Now each again has a chance at challenging Toomey, and perhaps later U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter.
As a senior state GOP official said, Ridge’s decision removes the “900-pound gorilla in the room.”
It certainly opens it up for more entries,” the source, who wished to remain anonymous, said.
State GOP Secretary John McNally said Ridge’s decision, in the long-run, will likely be better for the party because of the injection of new faces.
