House GOP Offers Plan to Save Jobs and Cut the Deficit

House Republicans on Wednesday unveiled a plan they say could close part of the state’s budget deficit without cutting state employee pay — but it would temporarily raise income taxes on every wage-earner in Delaware.

The governor puts the size of the current deficit at $800 million, though that number does not account for at least $200 million in revenue expected from stimulus funds and sports betting.

The Republicans’ plan, outlined in a letter the House minority sent to Gov. Jack Markell and the Joint Finance Committee, does count those dollars and says those revenues — which they estimate to be closer to $227 million — combined with their package of revenue-generating and cost-cutting suggestions, would close about $562 million of the $800 million hole.
