From the Chicago Tribune:
Reform met reality Thursday when self-styled outsider Gov. Pat Quinn cut a deal on the high-profile issue of campaign contribution limits that critics blasted as weak, ineffective and partly designed to benefit the governor himself.
Minutes after Quinn told an Illinois Senate panel “this is the best we can do at this time,” his handpicked ethics czar complained that the compromise would continue the “fundraising on steroids” that brought down former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
Lawmakers suggested that the price of Quinn’s alliance with House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton was the political equivalent of a handful of magic beans.
