He made the announcement at a Democratic fundraiser on Saturday night held at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach. Gelber cited the need for unity within the Democratic party as his main reason for his decision. Gelber was widely seen as the major opponent in the primary against Democratic Miami Congressman Kendrick Meek. He said he felt it best if Democrats focused all their efforts on defeating the Republican nominee.
Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and former House Speaker Marco Rubio will be the leading contenders for the GOP nomination.
