From Omaha.com:
“It’s the Nebraska we all know and love — the safe place to raise your kids,” Attorney General Jon Bruning said. “Public safety was the winner, not our office.”
Lawmakers passed an austere budget, a victory for taxpayers but bad news for state workers facing possible layoffs.
Other winners in the shortened 87-day session included public schools which, thanks to $234 million in federal stimulus help, saw aid increase by 10 percent in a tight budget year. Investors seeking to build wind farms won a tax break, and a handful of state business incentives were extended.
Spending will rise by only 1.1 percent on average in the next two years. There were no tax increases, and most fee increases were sent packing.
