The house voted in overwhelmingly bi-partisan fashion – 101-7 to pass the package on to the state senate. From the Chicago Tribune:
Staring at a deadline to begin the new budget year amid threats of severe cuts, the Illinois House passed a plan Monday to borrow $2.2 billion to help fund public employee pensions and free up money to restore some funding for social services.
Even with the House vote, expected to be followed with Senate approval Tuesday, the state spending plan for the budget year that begins Wednesday would remain billions of dollars out of balance.
The action came as a federal judge in Chicago ordered the Department of Children and Family Services to avoid cuts that would compromise care outlined in a federal consent decree.
