DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett, a Republican, said Thursday he has decided to run for attorney general in 2010.
“Over the last several months, I have come to the conclusion that the race for me is the race for attorney general,” Birkett said.
Birkett, 54, said people have encouraged him to run for governor, and he explored that in 2006 because of the need to get former Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich out of office. He ended up becoming running mate that year to gubernatorial candidate Judy Baar Topinka, but the GOP ticket lost to Blagojevich.
