Cruz (above) said he’ll run only if current GOP Attorney General Greg Abbott, his mentor, chooses not to seek re-election. Many speculate that Abbott is poised to run for lieutenant governor, provided that Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst moves on to the U.S. Senate — or at least a campaign to get there.
Dallas Republican state Rep. Dan Branch (below), who also is weighing a bid for attorney general, reacted this afternoon by announcing he will have more than $1 million in his political warchest when semiannual finance reports are released July 15.
