From the Detroit News:
Attorney General Mike Cox and the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee clashed Wednesday over a bill that would require cash settlements doled out to charities and others by Cox’s office instead to go through the Legislature’s spending process.
Cox, who gave surprise testimony before the committee, called the legislation “political,” “misguided” and “malevolent,” and said Chairman Mark Meadows, D-East Lansing, should be “ashamed” for moving it forward.
He added that the bill is an attack on the authority of his office, similar to attempts fought off in past years by former attorneys general Jennifer Granholm and Frank Kelley.
