“It has been a swell time,” said Senate leader Marc Basnight, D-Dare. “Good health and farewell.”
Though senators left town, the House plans to keep working until Tuesday. That means that the Senate and the General Assembly will be in official session until next week.
The legislative year has been sprinkled throughout with perks for businesses like Apple Inc. to move to or expand in North Carolina, and senators included new incentives yesterday.
The Senate gave final approval to a tax break for USAirways’ hub operation in Charlotte and fledgling jet manufacturer HondaJet in Greensboro. Auto dealers fighting attempts by General Motors and Chrysler to close excess outlets were given new legal leverage. The Senate passed a second effort to give $9 million to a Canadian-based paper company that wants the money to retool its plant in Plymouth. The House defeated an earlier effort late Thursday that supporters said was needed to retain 320 workers at the Domtar Corp.
