From Newsday.com:
State Senate Democrats Thursday announced new controls on staff hiring in the wake of Sen. Pedro Espada Jr.’s son briefly holding a $120,000-a-year job.
A three-member panel will “review and approve all personnel changes to the central staff,” said Selvena N. Brooks, a spokeswoman for Democratic chief John Sampson of Brooklyn. Sampson approved the Espada hiring.
The panel, which includes the Senate’s top administrator Angelo Aponte and lawyer Shelley Mayer, won’t control the practices of individual senators. It also won’t reverse the raft of new hires and pay hikes since Democrats regained control of the chamber on July 9 after a Republican-led coup.
