Mayor Scott Avedisian announced Friday morning that he will not seek the lieutenant governor’s office next year, but he left open the possibility of running for another political position.
The six-term Republican mayor was responding to speculation that he was planning to campaign for the seat currently held by Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts. Roberts has said she will seek reelection in 2010.
“Over the course of the past few months, I have been approached by numerous supporters urging me to consider running for the office of lieutenant governor,” Avedisian said in a statement. “After a thoughtful and thorough examination of this opportunity, I have decided not to run for lieutenant governor because I believe I can better serve the interests of my constituents in Warwick as well as the people of Rhode Island in another role.”
