Another Republican Special Election Victory

This time in Delaware:

 Ruth Briggs King defeated Democratic challenger Rob Robinson in a special election today, keeping the 37th House District seat in Republican hands and denying Democrats a supermajority in Dover.

Briggs King, 53, executive vice president of the Sussex County Association of Realtors, will fill the term of newly elected state Sen. Joe Booth after taking 53.6 percent of the vote in the Sussex County district.

The election held statewide political consquences. Before Booth, a Republican, was elected to the Senate seat of the late Thurman Adams, Democrats held a 24-16 edge over Republicans in the House.

A 25th vote would have given them the three-fifths majority needed to pass tax bills and override vetoes without Republican support. Robinson, a state public defender, said the issue was “a tough thing to get out from under” and likely played a role in the results.
