From the Birmingham News:
An Australian court of appeals has added six months in prison to the sentence of a Hoover man in the drowning death of his wife, but Alabama’s attorney general says that is not justice and he will seek a capital murder indictment.
The court announced its 2-1 decision Friday morning in Queensland (Thursday night here), according to the Townsville Bulletin newspaper. The decision increases Gabe Watson’s prison time from 12 months to 18.
In June, Watson was sentenced to 4½ years in prison, reduced to 12 months, when he pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter in the 2003 death of Christina ç Tina” Thomas Watson of Helena. The two were on their honeymoon, scuba diving off the coast of Queensland, when Tina Watson drowned. A certified rescue diver, Watson, 32, admitted he did not fulfill his obligation as his wife’s diving buddy.
