From The Washington Post:
Steve Hunt, a former Fairfax county school board member, easily won a three-way party canvass Tuesday evening to become the Republican nominee to be the next Virginia state senator from the 37th district in southwestern Fairfax County.
Hunt will run against Democratic Del. David W. Marsden (Fairfax) in the Jan. 12 special election. The winner will fill the seat to be vacated by Kenneth Cuccinelli II (R), who was elected to be state attorney general in last month’s Republican landslide.
In the canvass, Hunt defeated Marianne Horinko, a former Environmental Protection Agency administrator, and Will Nance, executive director of Greenspring retirement community.
Hunt received 955 votes, while Horinko got 479 and Nance 469.
The Republicans hope to hold the legislative seat and prevent the Democrats from adding to their narrow, 21-to-19 seat majority in the Senate.
