From the Boston Herald:
Beacon Hill pols are counting down the last minutes of the U.S. Senate election clock today in case it sparks an immediate behind-the-scenes scramble for the attorney general’s plum post.
“There’s an awful lot of intricate maneuvering going on,” said Rep. John J. Binienda (D-Worcester), chairman of the House Rules committee. “It all hinges on one chess move, and that’s (Martha) Coakley winning the seat.”
If Coakley wins in January, the Legislature can appoint a temporary attorney general to take over her seat until the election in November 2010. The outcome of today’s primary battle is vital, Binienda said, because most legislators believe the Democratic victor will win the general election.
