Republican lawmakers on Monday introduced legislation that would allow Arizona to participate in a lawsuit challenging the federal health care overhaul, a move that was criticized by Democrats who said the Legislature should instead focus on restoring cuts to children’s health care.
The legislation declares that the federal government has no constitutional authority to mandate the purchase of health coverage and allows Republican Gov. Jan Brewer to hire a lawyer to sue on the state’s behalf.
It’s not clear if Arizona would join an existing lawsuit or file its own.
The measure is co-sponsored by all 18 Republicans in the Senate and all 35 Republicans in the House. No Democrats signed on.
