Only one of North Dakota’s legislative districts has three candidates on the ballot in today’s primary, and they happen to be from the party that won’t field a full slate of contenders in one-third of the races next fall.

Three Fargo Democrats are competing for the right to run for two seats in the North Dakota House.

Scott Haugen is challenging incumbent Democratic reps. Kathy Hogan and Steve Zaiser. The top two finishers will run this fall to represent District 21 in downtown Fargo.

Zaiser, who was first elected in 2002, said he considered retiring from the Legislature.

“I got so many calls from people throughout the state urging me to run,” Zaiser said Tuesday. “They want someone who’s outspoken for the ordinary person.”

North Dakota Democrats won’t have a full slate of legislative candidates in eight of the 24 districts on the fall ballot. Normally, the two parties both have a Senate candidate and two House candidates in each district in the fall elections.
