Louisiana AG Runoff Update

From the Shreveport Times:

WASHINGTON — The early decision in the governor’s race has dramatically dimmed interest in next week’s elections, but there’s one wide-open statewide race that pits candidates with widely different backgrounds and ideologies against each other. The defeat of Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti in the primary last month allowed Democrat James “Buddy” Caldwell and Republican Royal Alexander to compete for the open seat, a rarity in state politics. The election is Saturday.

And the Bayou Buzz has this to say about the Alexander vs. Caldwell runoff:

One of the major factors in the race will be the voters who supported Charles Foti and the New Orleans City Council At Large Election pitting a white versus a black for a very important seat. African American District E Councilwoman Cynthia Willard-Lewis is battling Jacqueline Clarkson, former New Orleans Councilwoman and Louisiana Legislator. Some political pundits believe that a good turnout for Clarkson would help Royal Alexander, although Clarkson and Willard-Lewis are Democrats.

The seat for Attorney General has focused upon collateral issues of personal experiences and Republican versus Democrats rather than matters directly related to the Attorney General’s race.

You can view Buddy Caldwell’s latest spot here. We’ll have Royal Alexander’s latest as soon they post it on the net.

Well, Buddy Caldwell was able to benefit from Royal Alexander’s mistakes and won with 67%.

There is good news: the Republicans picked up a seat in the state Senate and have 15 out of 39 members. In the House, they won 48 seats and are leading in 2 more. There are also 2 Independents and 53 Democrats (out of 105). HOWEVER, I wouldn’t be surprised to see party switches that give Republicans the majority in the state House.
