LA: GOP Legislator Gets Nod As House Speaker

Congratulations to Representative Tucker. Tucker’s ascendancy is 100% do to the success of Republican state legislative candidates in Louisiana. Local press, and national Democrats will either spin this story the other way, or just ignore the Republican gains in Louisiana all together. The facts are overwhelming – Republicans made the gains, and may very well have the majority in the State House before the end of 2008.

State Rep. Jim Tucker, the Algiers Republican who helped usher in an era of political partisanship in Baton Rouge as leader of the House GOP caucus, will be speaker of the House when the Legislature convenes in January. With Tucker standing by his side, Gov.-elect Bobby Jindal made the announcement at his transition headquarters Tuesday, ending weeks of backstage jockeying by Tucker and his chief rival for the post, Rep. Donald Cazayoux, D-New Roads.

Thanks to voter disgust with the Democratic insiders and (for the first time ever) a coordinated effort to take the House, Republicans had a decent election night. The current numbers (excluding party switchers which may happen)

    House: Dem 53, Rep 50, Ind 2
    Senate: Dem 24, Rep 15

And in the House, a switch of less than 300 votes (or 600 more Republican votes) would have gotten the Republicans 53 votes, and a numerical majority. It was THAT close. In fact, there were 8 open House seats that Democrats won with 53% or less. So things are looking up for the Republicans in Louisiana !

Tucker, I listened to your long winded BS on Friday. I can not believe
you think a 300% pay raise was justified. I think anything over 10% pay increase is too much. Until this state is up to the national level, that we are currently at the bottom, I will never vote for Jindal if he doesn’t veto this crappy bill, nor would I vote or patronize any of the legislators that vote for this. You’re pathetic! William
