First, the death of an innocent person simply driving through the tunnel is nothing short of a tragedy. Now, the fact that it’s going to cost the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at least $1 million to attempt to bring manslaughter charges against a manufacturer involved in the Big Dig construction project in this case really is no big thing. In fact, it’s totally in tune with how the Big Dig project has been run. The project was initially budgeted at $2.8 billion, but the actual spending is over $14.6 billion. So in the “Big Dig” scheme of things – a lawyer making $30,000 a month is hardly worth a second look – right? What’s more, $12 billion later, Martha Coakley, the Massachusetts Democrat Attorney General, is looking for just $108 million from contractors for “shoddy work”. We’d imagine that Ms. Coakley sees an opportunity here to bring in some found money for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts stemming from this tragedy – we only hope that her motivation is justice, and not politics.
BOSTON – It has cost the State of Massachusetts almost $1 million to bring manslaughter charges against one company in the fatal collapse of the Big Dig construction project.
