RICHMOND — Republicans in the Virginia Senate shook up their leadership structure Monday, responding to an election that ended the GOP’s decade of control in the 40-member chamber.
The changes include the promotion of Sen. Steve Newman of Lynchburg, who becomes the chairman of the 19-member Senate Republican Caucus. Newman, whose district includes Bedford County and the city of Bedford, was among a group of conservative senators calling for new leadership in the aftermath of the Nov. 6 elections in which Democrats gained four seats to take control of the Senate.
