Maryland AG – Race to watch

It started off as a late breaking race.

Incumbent Democrat AG Joe Curran announced on May 9th,
surprising even some insiders, that he was not going to seek a 6th term
as Maryland Attorney General.

At one point there were 4 Democrat candidates, and now there are two –
there
were three until last week

All along there was one Republican candidate – Frederick County Prosecutor Scott Rolle who started off
his campaign with a political bang.  Rolle announced his candidacy with the
rather
popular Republican Governor Bob Ehrlich
, and the ever growing in popularity
Republican Lieutenant Governor Michael
Steele
at his side and heralding his achievements.

This race still has a long way to go.  There’s still
the 2-way, lost a couple of candidates along the way, Democrat primary between Montgomery
County Prosecutor Doug Gansler and former Baltimore City Prosecutor Stuart
Simms.  Gansler has a significant finance advantage over Simms – $1.4
million vs. $5,400 at last counting.  But, Simm’s coming out of
Baltimore gives him a decent base of support that knows and likes him.  Can
it be overcome by Gansler’s millions – some smart guys in MD
politics some yes, some say no.  Somebody’s going to be wrong,
right?  It’s going to be interesting to watch what happens on
September 12th either way.

Scott Rolle on the other hand
has no primary to deal with, the backing and blessing of the popular Governor
and his organization, and the knowledge that his Dem opponent, whoever it is,
comes out of the primary bruised and broke.  There are a few states
working out that way for AG races this year – see NY and WI at least.

So what’s Rolle doing – he’s
roll(e)ing up endorsements

Mr. Rolle won support from the
Prince George's Fraternal Order of Police, Deputy Sheriff's Association and
Maryland National Capital Park Police.

 “It's just huge,” Mr.
Rolle said in a phone interview before the announcement.

Pretty good day for prosecutor Rolle.

This race will break late – very late.
