CA: Lt. Governor Candidates get Endorsements

From ContraCostaTimes:

THE OFFICE OF lieutenant governor is largely whatever the holder makes of it. There are several official duties, including serving on the state Lands Commission, the Ocean Protection Council, the California Commission for Economic Development, the UC Board of Regents and the California State University Board of Trustees.

The lieutenant governor has considerable discretion on how much time and effort he or she wants to spend on any of these areas. What is not discretionary is standing in for the governor and being ready to be governor on an instant’s notice.

We believe that Republican Abel Maldonado, who recently was appointed lieutenant governor, and Democrat Gavin Newsom, mayor of San Francisco, are best prepared for the governorship should it become necessary.

Alaska: Meet the Three Republicans Running for Lt. Governor

From Anchorage Press:

The lieutenant governor’s position in Alaska doesn’t carry a lot of responsibility. He or she runs the division of elections, administers the citizens’ initiative process, commissions notaries public, protects the state seal, and distributes the constitution. And that’s about it.

But the lieutenant governor also can unexpectedly become governor, as current Governor Sean Parnell and Keith Miller long before him (who succeeded Governor Wally Hickel when President Nixon appointed Hickel Secretary of the Interior) can attest. (In Miller’s time, the position was called secretary of state; it was changed to lieutenant governor in 1970)

As Steve Haycox, a professor of history at UAA, writes in an email, “the lite-guv is essentially a political position, i.e., most of the people holding it are angling for statewide visibility to help position themselves for a larger run at governor.”

But so far in Alaska’s history as a state, that’s only worked out for Parnell and Miller, when their predecessors left the governorship. At least one went on to serve in lower offices: H.A. “Red” Boucher, lieutenant governor under Governor Bill Egan, afterward served in the Alaska House of Representatives, and later the Anchorage Assembly.

IL: Governor Candidate Picks Campaign Worker as Lt. Governor Running Mate

From Northwest Herald:

A pawnbroker who’s running for Illinois governor after quitting the lieutenant governor’s race announced his running mate on Wednesday but acknowledged the pick wasn’t his first choice.

Scott Lee Cohen said he first asked Democratic state Sen. James Meeks to run as lieutenant governor with him in an independent bid, but eventually settled on former campaign worker Baxter Swilley.

“He was not my first choice but he is the best choice,” Cohen said of the 35-year-old Swilley.

NY: Governor Paterson won’t be Attending Obama Event

From WBEN.com:

While many other Democratic dignitaries will be on hand to welcome President Barack Obama, don’t expect any glad-handing from Gov. David Paterson when Obama visits Buffalo.

The only item on the governor’s official schedule today is a radio interview in New York City, and apparently won’t be in Buffalo.

Earlier this week, he told WBEN that – as of that time– he was uncertain of whether he would be in town and just one day after the event was announced publicly Paterson said he didn’t know if he was invited.

“In his own way, I think the Governor was expressing his unhappiness that the courtesy of giving him a heads up, letting him know that the President of the United States is coming into the state that he heads, wasn’t given to him,” says New York Post editor and Albany commentator Fred Dicker.

NM: Republican Adds Cash to his Lt. Governor Campaign

From SantaFeNewmexican.com:

Republican John Sanchez is bankrolling his campaign in a three-way primary election race for the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor, according to the latest fundraising reports.

Sanchez, an Albuquerque roofing company owner, lent his campaign $75,000 during the past month, bringing to $348,800 the personal money he’s put into the race for lieutenant governor. He was the GOP gubernatorial nominee in 2002, but lost to Democrat Bill Richardson in the general election.

Sanchez reported cash-on-hand of $153,732 in his campaign account as of last week. Former state Rep. Brian Moore of Clayton had $128,086 and state Sen. Kent Cravens of Albuquerque had a campaign balance of $74,586, according to fundraising disclosures filed Monday with the secretary of state’s office.

In the five-way race for the Democratic nomination, former state party chairman Brian Colon had the largest campaign reserves — $114,050. Lawrence Rael reported cash-on-hand of $68,356; state Rep. Jose Campos of Santa Rosa, $65,723; state Sen. Gerald Ortiz y Pino, $7,105; and state Sen. Linda Lopez, $2,116.

Winners of the lieutenant governor races in the June 1 primary become the running mates of their gubernatorial nominees.

SC: 5 Candidates Want to be Lt. Governor

From The State:

The five candidates – four Republicans and a lone Democrat – vying for the chance to succeed Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer say the office still is relevant and can play a greater, rather than lesser, role in the state’s future.

Bauer is giving up the post he has held for eight years for a chance to become the state’s next governor.

State law narrowly tailors the lieutenant governor’s duties as stepping into the governor’s seat should it become legally necessary, presiding over the Senate and, more recently, administering the Office on Aging.

CA: Gender and Geography Separates Dems in Lt. Governor Race

From the Sacramento Bee:

They’re both big-city California politicians and self-described progressive Democrats, with endorsements from friends who call them champions of labor, the environment and civil rights.

But Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom aren’t just peas in an ideological pod, albeit with different personalities.

California Assembly Confirms Lt. Governor Nomination

From LATimes:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s nominee to fill the vacant lieutenant governor’s office cleared his last significant hurdle Thursday, apparently ending a drawn-out political ordeal that had become emblematic of Sacramento’s partisan gridlock.

State Sen. Abel Maldonado (R-Santa Maria) was approved by the Assembly on Thursday and faces a second confirmation vote Monday in the state Senate, but the upper house approved him once before, in February, and is not expected to vote against him now.

Maldonado, who gained notoriety by crossing party lines to vote with majority Democrats for the state budget last year, had to navigate a political minefield of fellow Republicans who called him a traitor for agreeing to tax increases and Democrats bent on denying him the advantage of incumbency in November’s election.
