CA: Race for Lt. Governor Splits State’s Democrats

From North County Times:

Eager to return Sen. Barbara Boxer to Washington and anoint Jerry Brown as their gubernatorial candidate, California Democrats paid little attention over the weekend to a race that may be crucial to the party’s future.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn are locked in a heated, under-the-radar primary battle for lieutenant governor, a job with few responsibilities but one that can become a steppingstone to the governor’s seat. The position has remained vacant since Democrat John Garamendi won a seat in Congress last fall.

Newsom, best known for legalizing gay marriage in San Francisco before courts halted the unions, jumped into the primary at the last minute after dropping out of the governor’s race last year. That has forced Hahn to campaign harder despite her family’s strong name recognition in Southern California.

IL: Candidates See Need for Lt. Governor Candidate

From TheSouthern.com:

The Democrat and Republican candidates for lieutenant governor see a need for the office, and not just because they want a job.

Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan proposed legislation in February to cut the position entirely, but candidates on both sides of the aisle think that may not be a great idea. Madigan recently reiterated his stance Monday on Chicago Public Radio saying that the position is merely waiting to fill the vacancy of governor and that it could easily be filled by the attorney general.

Democratic candidate Sheila Simon said there are more important issues to worry about in the state such as the “state’s budget and how to get more jobs for the state of Illinois.” She said she feels the job is important for helping the state and the governor.

Alaska: Appointed Lt. Governor Won’t Seek Post

Lt. Gov. Craig Campbell announced Friday he will not seek election to the position he was appointed to last summer.

Campbell, 58, had been head of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs when he was chosen by former Gov. Sarah Palin. He was replacing then-Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who replaced Palin a month earlier.

Campbell said that means he’ll be withdrawing from the Aug. 24 Republican Primary.

AR: Two Republicans and a Democrat Seek Lt. Governor Job

From Arkansas News:

Republican lieutenant governor candidate Mark Darr went on the offensive last week, criticizing state Sen. Shane Broadway, the only Democratic candidate for the office, for apparently lacking enough business experience for the job.

Darr’s attack on Broadway may not seem that unusual this close to the May 18 primary election, but it appeared a bit premature considering Darr, of Rogers, faces a GOP primary challenge from Donnie Copeland of Sherwood.

SD: Republican Lt. Governor Widens Lead

From kotatv.com:

Rasmussen Reports’ latest survey of likely voters in South Dakota shows Republican Lieutenant Governor Dennis Daugaard leading Democrat Scott Heidepriem 49-32%. The margin of error is 4.5%. Undecideds make up 13% in this pairing.

But only Daugaard could defeat Heidepriem if the election were held right now.

In a matchup against other Republicans in the race, Heidepriem comes out on top. Heidepriem now leads State Senate Majority Leader Dave Knudson 37% to 32%. Undecideds account for 19% in this faceoff.

Dems Don’t Pick one of 200 that Applied online; Select Familiar Name for Lt. Governor

From The New York Times:

In the end, the winner of the Illinois Democratic Party’s open audition to be the nominee for lieutenant governor was not one of the some 200 unknowns who had stepped forward, among them a brick salesman, a police officer and a violinist. Instead, party leaders on Saturday chose a name familiar across the state: Sheila Simon, the daughter of former Senator Paul Simon.

Ms. Simon, a 49-year-old lawyer and former City Council member in Carbondale, some 300 miles south of Chicago, will share the ticket led by Gov. Patrick J. Quinn, who was elevated from lieutenant governor last year after a corruption scandal engulfed his predecessor, Rod R. Blagojevich. Political experts said the choice seemed an effort to provide geographical balance for a ticket otherwise weighted toward Chicago, the state’s largest city, and some inoculation (if that is possible) against the memory of the corruption scandal.

TN: Lt. Governor Ramsey Wants AG to Oppose Health Care Law

From Chattanooga Times Free Press:

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, stepped up demands Tuesday that state Attorney General Bob Cooper join 13 other states in opposing implementation of new federal health care reforms.

“The United States Constitution does not give the federal government the authority for this massive power grab that will reduce individual liberty and strangle state government finances,” said Lt. Gov. Ramsey, who is Senate speaker. “Politicians in Washington may have temporarily lost their minds, but we still have our sanity out here in the states and we need to take action to roll this law back.”

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama signed the health care reform bill into law.
