IL: Dems Get all sorts of Lt. Governor Applicants on Website
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:43 Written by rslcpol Friday, 5 March 2010 11:05
From Pantagraph.com:
Illinois’ Democratic voters picked a pawnbroker as their candidate for lieutenant governor, and that didn’t exactly end well. So perhaps they won’t mind if the next candidate doesn’t have a job. Or is still in school. Or isn’t actually a Democrat.
At least that’s what some applicants for the No. 2 spot on the Democratic ticket seem to hope. The Democratic Party of Illinois has received more than 70 applications since it began accepting them on its Web site this week. Applicants included a former senior adviser to disgraced ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich and an out-of-work technician who answered the question “Why are you a Democrat?” with “Who said I was?”

From WCVBTV:
Republican Charles Baker and running mate Richard Tisei continue to blow away the Massachusetts gubernatorial field when it comes to fundraising.
The duo said Wednesday they had raised a combined $561,000 in February, compared to $250,000 for Gov. Deval Patrick and his running mate, Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray.
The newly minted independent ticket of Timothy Cahill and Paul Loscocco reported raising about $87,000.

NJ: Lt. Governor Hears Complaints
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:46 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 3 March 2010 02:21
From nj.com:
Every year, 125 state agencies produce around 400 proposals that can change thousands of rules in New Jersey that affect nearly every aspect of life in the state. The process, which can take over a year, has produced 26,000 pages of regulations that can be conflicting, redundant and obsolete.
And as difficult it is for companies to keep up with all those rules — new and old — it’s even more frustrating to challenge them, industry representatives told a bipartisan panel hosted today in Glassboro by Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno.
“The system is broken, it’s totally broken,” said Michael Karmatz, president of the New Jersey Builders Association. “Why would anyone want to invest in New Jersey when it takes five, six years to get approvals? All we want is a level playing field. If you’re not going to allow it, tell us in the beginning.”

IL: Democrats go online with their Lt. Governor Search
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:46 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 2 March 2010 03:49
Check out some of those who’ve submitted their names for consideration here.
From Hotline On Call:
IL Dems will meet 3/15 to choose a new LG nominee and running mate for Gov. Pat Quinn (D). There’s no front-runner for the spot, and dozens of names have been tossed around for consideration. Most observers assume a prominent state legislator or another well-known IL activist will land the gig.
But that hasn’t stopped IL Dems from taking resume submissions on their party website.
The website, announced last week, has more than 40 names who have submitted their resumes for consideration as of this morning. LG contenders also have to answer a one-page questionnaire, which includes such questions as “Why are you a Democrat?” and “What strengths would you bring to the ticket?” Anyone who submits an application will see it posted online, including contact information and references.

State Sen. Shane Broadway says he’s running for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor.
Broadway sent a news release Monday that said he would hold a formal event Wednesday to launch his bid. He made the announcement shortly after Lt. Gov. Bill Halter said he would challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln in the May primary. Halter was elected lieutenant governor in 2006.
Broadway, who is from Bryant, has served in the state Senate since 2003 and is a former state House speaker.

LA Democrat – Don’t Let Appointed Lt. Governor Run
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:49 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 2 March 2010 02:15
From BestofNewOrleans.com:
State Rep. Neil Abramson, D-New Orleans, has prefiled a bill to bar the person who will serve as the appointed interim lieutenant governor after May 3 from running for the job in the fall. The lieutenant governor’s office will become vacant when its current occupant, Mitch Landrieu, takes the oath of office as New Orleans’ next mayor. Under current law, Gov. Bobby Jindal will nominate an interim replacement, who must be approved by a two-thirds vote of both the House and Senate. Because more than a year will remain in Landrieu’s term when he resigns, a special election will be held in the fall to choose a successor.

From USA Today:
Arkansas Sen. Blanche Lincoln’s road to reelection got tougher today.
Lt. Gov. Bill Halter announced in a video that he will be running against Lincoln in the Democratic primary.
“Washington is broken,” he says in the video. “Enough is enough.”
Among other images in the video, Halter is shown standing next to former President Bill Clinton. Halter worked on Clinton’s first presidential campaign and followed the former Arkansas governor to Washington. Halter worked six years in Clinton’s budget office, and two years at the Social Security Administration.

Stateline – The Fuss over Lt. Governors
Last Updated on Monday, 1 March 2010 02:42 Written by rslcpol Monday, 1 March 2010 02:42
From Stateline.org:
In California, as in several other states, it’s hard to keep in mind that the lieutenant governor’s office is primarily designed to be a sort of insurance policy in case something happens to the governor. Instead, in several states like California, the position recently has been a political liability. The intrigue is even more baffling because many of the most hotly contested fights are in states where the lieutenant governor’s powers are relatively weak.
To be sure, in a few states, the lieutenant governor’s powers rival that of the governor. In others, the lieutenant governor holds dual appointments as agency directors or constitutional officers. But in California, Illinois and Louisiana, states that are now questioning whether to even keep the position, the lieutenant governor’s responsibilities are minor.

Husband-Wife Ticket in Georgia
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:54 Written by rslcpol Friday, 26 February 2010 02:28
From ajc.com:
Carol Porter will seek the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor, joining her husband, DuBose Porter, as a potential husband and wife team at the top of the party’s ticket.
Carol Porter, who announced her intention at a Capitol news conference with her husband and their boys at her side, becomes the first Democrat to announce for lieutenant governor. Incumbent Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle is seeking re-election on the Republican side.
DuBose Porter, the House minority leader, is one of five Democrats seeking the gubernatorial nomination. Should they both become Democratic nominees, it sets up a potentially historic one-two punch. But Carol Porter said it’s not a gimmick aimed at boosting her husband’s campaign.

SC: Lt. Governor and Attorney General Winning the Name Race
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:57 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 25 February 2010 01:56
From The State:
South Carolinians are far more familiar with Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer and state Attorney General Henry McMaster than the other Republicans running for governor.
But nearly as many Republicans dislike Bauer as like him, a factor that could hinder his ability to make it to a runoff.
The two other Republicans in the governor’s race, U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett of Westminster and state Rep. Nikki Haley of Lexington County – and the entire Democratic field – are not known to South Carolinians.
