LA: Governor Considers Scrapping Lt. Governor Position

From Nola:

Gov. Bobby Jindal, who would have the option of nominating a new lieutenant governor should New Orleanians elect Mitch Landrieu as mayor, said today that he may push for eliminating the lieutenant governorship altogether.

Jindal’s remarks echo statements offered by his chief of staff Timmy Teepell and published first in The Advocate newspaper of Baton Rouge.

The move would require a state constitutional amendment, meaning the Republican governor would have to convince two thirds of each legislative chamber and a majority of the electorate to scrap one of Louisiana’s six statewide offices.

IL: Race for Lieutenant Governor Takes Wacky Turn

From Chicago Sun-Times:

– Few dispute that Illinois’ lieutenant governor is a backwater political office, so can it be any surprise that two of the dozen candidates vying for the vacant post have spent time bickering over an alleged eviction more than three decades ago?

State Sen. Rickey Hendon once rented an apartment from state Rep. Art Turner, and neither lieutenant governor candidate disputes that. But the two West Side Democrats don’t agree on why Hendon left.

IL: Six Republicans in the running for Lt. Governor

From Quad-City Times:

The six Republicans running for their party’s nomination for Illinois lieutenant governor might be able to see two key opportunities driving their campaigns.

First, Gov. Pat Quinn’s ascension to his job from the No. 2 spot serves as a reminder that the lieutenant governor is one mishap away from the state’s top spot.

Second, Republicans running for offices across Illinois are hoping Democrats suffer at the polls this year after the continuing Rod Blagojevich scandal and the budget deficit widening under Democrats’ control.

Those factors considered, the Republican field in Tuesday’s primary is a varied one, ranging from the mayor of Carbondale to a state senator from the Chicago suburbs and a young businessman from the St. Louis area.

They’ve spent time in their campaigns maligning Democrats’ control. But they’ve also tried to distinguish themselves from the crowd and tell voters what they’d do with the lieutenant governor’s office, which has very few mandatory responsibilities.

Dem Lt. Governor Candidate Changes Mind about Taking Family Money

From Chron.com:

But the Austin restaurant owner showed less than $7,000 on his first campaign finance report – and more than $5,000 of that came from himself.

Katz says he changed his mind about taking a bunch of money from out-of-state-family because the plan backfired.

“The negativity on that was massive. It made me very unpopular, so I had to take my head out of the sand,” Katz said of supporters who poured cold water on the idea.

GILLESPIE NAMED RSLC CHAIRMAN, REYNOLDS VICE CHAIRMAN

– WILL PROVIDE STRATEGIC GUIDANCE, ASSIST 2010 POLITICAL REDISTRICTING EFFORT –

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Heading into a pivotal year for Republicans at all levels of government, Ed Gillespie, former Republican National Committee Chairman and Counselor to the President, has been named Chairman of the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC). The RSLC is the nation’s largest caucus of Republican state leaders – focused on electing Republican Attorneys General, Lieutenant Governors, Secretaries of State and state legislators. Gillespie will provide strategic guidance on political and communication activities – with a particular focus on 2010 political redistricting efforts. In addition, former NY Congressman and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman (NRCC) Tom Reynolds – who also served in the NY State Assembly – will serve as Vice Chairman and lead the redistricting effort.

“There is a great deal of momentum for Republicans this election year, but momentum alone will not guarantee success. We are looking at every opportunity to increase and obtain legislative majorities – and Ed Gillespie’s record of winning will help our winning cause,” said Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) President Scott Ward. “There is a lot at stake this year because state elections will determine who draws state legislative and Congressional district boundaries after completion of the 2010 census. These elections will help shape the political landscape for the next decade and we are fortunate to have Ed’s steady leadership guiding us through this election year.”

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki is strongly reconsidering a run for the U.S. Senate against Sen. Harry Reid, he told the Sun on Wednesday, a move that would shake up a crowded Republican primary.

“There are serious people making compelling arguments to me both in the state and out of the state to reconsider the Harry Reid race, and based on that pressure and those conversations, I am indeed looking at it,” Krolicki said.

AR: GOP Lt. Governor Candidate Says Democrat is out of touch

From Arkansas News:

Restaurant owner Mark Darr of Springdale says he will run as a Republican to challenge Lt. Gov. Bill Halter, claiming the Democratic incumbent is out of touch with most Arkansans.

Darr, who formed an exploratory committee last year and announced his candidacy Tuesday night, said today he was launching his campaign with $152,000 on hand — $150,000 of it from a loan he made to his campaign in December.

Darr, 36, is a licensed insurance agent and owner of MAD Pizza Company in Rogers.

Darr said Arkansans need elected officials “who believe the way we believe.” He cited Halter’s support of national health care reform and opposition to a 2008 initiated act banning unmarried couples from adopting or serving as foster parents in Arkansas as positions he believes are not shared by most Arkansans.
