Arkansas: Lt. Governor to join Primary Against Senator?

From WhoRunsGov.com:

In a step in that direction, Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter, who’s widely rumored to be mulling a challenge to Lincoln, came to Washington D.C. to huddle with a group of labor officials and liberal bloggers to discuss possibly making the race, two sources who were there tell me.

The gathering was held at the D.C. home of blogger Jane Hamsher, whose group Accountability Now encourages primary challenges. Reached by phone, Hamsher confirmed the gathering, but declined further comment.

It’s unclear how serious Halter is about the challenge, but the fact that he’s meeting with labor officials and bloggers to discuss the possibility is significant. Halter didn’t tell the assembled that he would make the race, but he made it clear he was seriously considering it, the sources said.

Nevada AG Won’t Appeal Dismissal of Lt. Governor Case

From Nevada Appeal:

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said Thursday she won’t appeal a judge’s dismissal of a criminal case accusing Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and his top aide of misappropriating funds from a state college savings program.

Masto said she disagreed with Clark County District Court Judge Valerie Adair’s decision Monday to cancel next week’s trial and throw out the case based on what Masto termed “a technicality.”

“The judge merely found the charging document, the indictment, was deficient,” said Masto, a Democrat who drew fire from defense attorneys for what they called a political prosecution of an elected Republican state official and his chief of staff, Kathryn Besser.

Louisiana Lt. Governor Running for Mayor

From Nola.com:

Throwing a wrench into a New Orleans mayoral contest that seemed to be all but set on the eve of qualifying, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu appears poised to enter the race for the open seat Tuesday, reversing a mid-summer decision that he would take a pass.

Sources close to Landrieu, who lost a hard-fought runoff to Mayor Ray Nagin in 2006, said the lieutenant governor will attend a Tuesday morning news conference at Cafe Reconcile and urged reporters to be on hand. Landrieu could not be reached for comment.A legislative source said Landrieu told his staff about his plans to run late Monday and a longtime Landrieu supporter said the lieutenant governor was making phone calls to financial backers to inform them that he will be among those who sign up to run for mayor when the three-day qualifying period opens Wednesday.

Charges against Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and his chief of staff tied to his alleged mismanagement of a college savings program were dismissed this morning in Clark County District Court.

CA: Column – Dems Would Do Right by Confirming Lt. Governor Appointee

From the LA Times:

Within a few weeks, the embattled and belittled California Legislature will take one of two actions:

* Approve state Sen. Abel Maldonado’s nomination by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to be lieutenant governor because that’s the smart and right thing to do.

* Or reject the nomination in another exhibition of petty and partisan politics.

“This Legislature is in public disrepute, and one reason is they all hate each other,” says Tony Quinn, political analyst and former GOP legislative advisor. “This is a chance to reduce the partisan bile.”

“Hate” may be a tad strong. “Fear” is probably more precise in this era of musical-chair term limits. The Capitol is full of competitors.

CA: Lt. Gov. Appointee Says He’ll Run for full Term

From the Sacramento Bee:

Lieutenant governor appointee Abel Maldonado said yesterday he’s planning to run for a full term at the post in 2010, even if he isn’t confirmed by his fellow lawmakers.

“If I’m good enough to be nominated, I’m good enough to run,” the Republican senator told The Fresno Bee editorial board yesterday.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced late last month that Maldonado is his pick to fill the post vacated by former “Lite Guv” John Garamendi who was elected to Congress in November. Schwarzenegger’s Nov. 23 announcement set off a 90-day window for the legislature to approve or reject the nomination.

CT: Republican Lt. Governor Formally Enters Governor Race

From The Associated Press:

Connecticut Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele announced Wednesday that he has entered the race for governor, becoming the first Republican to formally declare his candidacy for the seat being vacated by Republican M. Jodi Rell next year.

Fedele, 54, said his private-sector experience would be an asset in trying to restore lost jobs and boost the economy. He is founder and chairman of an information technology company, and was chosen by Rell to be her running mate in 2006.

“I think we have a defining moment here in Connecticut, an opportunity to turn the state around,” Fedele told The Associated Press before his official announcements in Cromwell and his hometown of Stamford. “I think as governor I can help the state get through the financial crisis.”

Other Republicans have been considering throwing their hats into the ring ever since Rell announced Nov. 9 that she would not seek re-election.

VT: Republican Senator Enters Race for Lt. Governor

From TimesArgus.com:

Sen. Phil Scott, a five-term Republican from Washington County, will announce today that he is running for lieutenant governor in 2010.

The 51-year-old Vermont native will formally enter the race this evening at a meeting of the Associated General Contractors of Vermont at the Sheraton Hotel in Burlington. Scott, co-owner of Dubois Construction in Montpelier, calls himself a moderate Republican whose aisle-crossing negotiation skills will serve him well in the statewide post.

“I feel that I could be helpful in the future as a bridge between the administration and the Legislature,” Scott said Monday evening. “It seems that we’ve had somewhat of a gap there, and we need to bridge that gap in order to move forward. I have a lot of experience facilitating tough negotiations between both parties, and I think that experience lends itself to this position.”

Mississippians Eye Statewide Offices

From SunHerald.com:

With Gov. Haley Barbour leaving office in 2012 because of term limits and other statewide elected officials possibly seeking higher office in 2011 elections, as many as four South Mississippians might run for vacant posts.

But in recent decades, only two Coastians have won Mississippi-wide races — former U.S. Sen. Trent Lott and former Attorney Gen. Mike Moore. Many think that’s partly because, for many years, South Mississippi was considered relatively cut off from the rest of the state and also culturally different from more upland areas.

The true reason few Coastians have won may be that since 1987, Moore and Lott, besides being the only Coast candidates to be elected in statewide races, are also the only South Mississippians who sought open seats.
