NY: Disgraced ex-Governor Spitzer Thinks Current Governor is doing Great Job

From New York Daily News:

Gov. Paterson may not have the President’s backing, but he got a ringing endorsement Thursday from hooker-happy Eliot Spitzer – the man who got him into this mess in the first place.

“David is a friend. He is somebody I support,” the disgraced former governor said at Harvard University’s Safra ethics center.

“All Democrats in the state should support him,” Spitzer told the Daily News after delivering a lecture on big business corruption.

“He is making tough decisions on the budget and the welter of issues that need to be confronted in a moment of economic crisis, and he is doing so thoughtfully.”

Texas Lt. Governor Unsure of Senate Race

From MyWestTexas.com:

If Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison doesn’t resign by the January filing date for candidates, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said Wednesday he will simply run for the post he currently holds.

“I’m not going to get into a race where a vacancy doesn’t exist,” he said, adding he’s focusing on his current job and will consider a run for senator only if Hutchison resigns in the coming months.

“I don’t want to be distracted unless there’s a position open,” he said, speaking to the Reporter-Telegram editorial board while in town Wednesday.

As lieutenant governor, Dewhurst said he is working to put together topics for Senate committees to consider during the interim.

CT: Lt. Governor Waiting in the Wings?

From ConnPost.com:

When Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced she would not seek re-election, two prominent lower Fairfield County Republicans were automatically elevated to frontrunners for the party’s nomination.

Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele, of Stamford, during a brief impromptu news conference outside the governor’s office, said that while he had hoped his boss would run in 2010, he is ready for the top job. He also told reporters Rell had privately endorsed him, even though the governor a few minutes earlier declined to say whether she favored any particular candidate as a successor.

CT: Republican Governor Not Running for Re-election

From Courant.com:

An emotional Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced Monday that she will not seek re-election next year, signaling the end of a tenure that brought her the highest popularity ratings in Connecticut history and setting off a scramble to replace her when she steps down in January 2011.

Rell gave no specific reason for her stunning announcement, saying only that “it’s time” to leave high-level public office after a long career that includes more than five years as governor, 10 years as lieutenant governor and 10 years as a state legislator.

Rell choked up several times as she recounted exchanges with state voters who offered a simple thank you for her work in office.

Conservatives Set Sights on 2010

From KDVR.com:

One year to the day after President Barack Obama stepped onto a stage in Chicago’s Grant Park after a historic election win, Republicans savored two victories in Tuesday’s gubernatorial contests in New Jersey and Virginia.

On the surface, it may not be much. But conservatives are hopeful it’s a sign of things to come as they look to build momentum heading into next year’s midterm Congressional elections.

“The election has some significance as we look at 2010. The question now is how much?” said Norman Provizer, a professor of political science at Metro State College of Denver. “The biggest thing, frankly, is how it’s played in the media. You’re going to get a number of days with stories talking about how the Republicans are back from the dead — kind of the post- Halloween story, if you will.”

Statewide Races Swept by Republicans in Virginia

From Roanoke.com:

Former attorney general Bob McDonnell was elected the state’s 71st governor by a decisive margin today.

McDonnell soundly defeated Democrat Creigh Deeds, a state senator from Bath County. Incumbent Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling won a convincing re-election victory, and Republican state Sen. Ken Cuccinelli of Fairfax County won the contest for attorney general.

McDonnell, 55, won with a message aimed squarely at voters’ concerns about the economy while downplaying his staunch conservative positions on social issues. Just one year after Democrat Barack Obama carried Virginia in the presidential election, McDonnell found the state’s political landscape to be fertile ground for a Republican revival.

REPUBLICANS SWEEP VIRGINIA

For IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 3, 2009

PressReleaseLOGO

 – REPUBLICANS ELECTED TO GOVERNOR, ATTORNEY GENERAL, LT. GOVERNOR; INCREASE MAJORITY IN HOUSE OF DELEGATES BY 6 SEATS –

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Not since the late ‘90s have the Republicans had such a strong victory in the Commonwealth – but tonight former Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell was elected Governor, Bill Bolling re-elected Lieutenant Governor, and State Senator Ken Cuccinelli was elected as Attorney General.  In addition, the Republicans increased their majority in the House of Delegates by six – picking up seats in Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads and Southwest Virginia. After trending “blue” over recent years Virginians are sending a strong message to Washington, D.C., that enough is enough.  The Republican State Leadership Committee, the nation’s largest caucus of Republican state leaders, contributed more than $1.5 million to state races in the Commonwealth this year.

“Tonight is a tremendous victory for the taxpayers of Virginia. This overwhelming victory is due to individuals who trust free people and free enterprise – and want government to get out of the way,” said Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) President Scott Ward. “Our candidates listened to the voices of the people, and offered a clear vision of fiscal responsibility and economic growth that attracted not only Republicans, but Independents and Democrats as well, to our winning cause.  They understand taxpayers are the owners of the government – and that the government ought to let individuals determine their destiny rather than government gimmicks that reduce their freedoms.”

In addition to the over $1.5 million in contributions, the RSLC implemented a new media strategy to heighten the awareness of the importance of winning these seats.  Not only did Republicans have an exceptional night in Virginia, but since November of last year, Republicans have won 26 special elections for the state legislature – gaining eight seats previously held by Democrats.
