VT: Republican Lt. Governor Announces Run for Governor

From Vermont Public Radio:

Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie announced Thursday that he will run for governor in 2010.

The Republican from Essex Junction has been lieutenant governor for seven years.

Dubie has been urged by Republicans to jump into the race since Gov. Jim Douglas announced a month ago that he would step down when his term ends in early 2011.

Douglas was among the high-profile Republicans who said Dubie was the candidate to beat next year.

VA: McDonnell and Bolling Pitch Budget Reforms

From Richmond Times Dispatch:

The men at the top of the Republican ticket want to increase the amount of money the state can stash in its Rainy Day Fund; institute performance audits of major agencies and change the cycle of the state’s two-year budget.

These were among the proposals that GOP gubernatorial nominee Bob McDonnell and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling outlined this morning in a call with reporters to discuss budget and spending reform.

The Rainy Day fund was an idea of Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, who served from 1990-94.

Under the GOP plan, its permissible size would increase from 10 percent to 15 percent of the state’s annual income and sales tax revenues. The change would require a constitutional amendment, and the General Assembly has already started the process, Bolling said. It will be back before the legislature this year.

NJ: LG Candidates Figure out Their Roles

From NJ.com:

Come January, New Jersey will swear in the state’s first-ever lieutenant governor, a new position whose holder will have to figure out the job as she goes along.

The role is a new one to the campaigns, too.

Incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine’s running mate, state Sen. Loretta Weinberg, is taking on a role vice presidential candidates usually fill: Designated campaign attack dog.

This month, two Corzine campaign news releases have begun, “Weinberg blasts Christie.”

VA: FOP Endorses Republicans in Attorney General and Governor Race

From the Washington Post:

The Virginia chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police endorsed former attorney general Bob McDonnell, the Republican nominee for governor, this morning at a news conference on Capitol Square in Richmond.

The group represents more than 8,000 local, state and federal law enforcement officials and lodges across Virginia.

The FOP also endorsed McDonnell’s running mates, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, who is running for re-election against Jody Wagner, and attorney general candidate Ken Cuccinelli, who faces Steve Shannon.

There were signs that Democrat Creigh Deeds may have trouble securing the FOP endorsement as early as last week when he gave the FOP and another group representing state public safety employees differing answers about whether he supports collective bargaining for law enforcement personnel.

NY: Lt. Governor Suddenly in Demand

From The New York Times:

“What is Twitter?” Lt. Gov. Richard Ravitch asked a reporter on Tuesday, clearly befuddled by an invitation he had just received asking him to join the popular Web messaging network.

“Somebody sent me three messages saying, ‘Please come on Twitter.’ I don’t know what the hell …” he grumbled, his voice trailing off.

Mr. Ravitch, who was given the green light to take his seat as lieutenant governor on Tuesday after a nearly three-month legal battle, is suddenly back in demand.

NY Court Approves Governor Lt. Governor Appointment

From The Record:

New York’s top court on Tuesday narrowly approved Gov. David Paterson’s surprising appointment of a lieutenant governor, reversing a lower court’s decision and the long-standing assumption in Albany that only voters could choose a second in command.

The ruling restores the line of succession to the governor’s seat in Albany, where low poll numbers have sapped Paterson’s political clout and put him under pressure from fellow Democrats not to run for election next year.

Paterson’s lawyers argued that a provision of state law allows the governor to fill vacancies, including Paterson’s July 8 appointment of Richard Ravitch.

Former Lt. Gov. Paterson Ignores White House, Will Run for Governor

From Oswego County Today:

This will be awkward.

President Obama will be in Troy today for a speech at Hudson Valley Community College.  Gov. David Paterson will be there, too, just one day after the New York Times reported that Obama’s political advisor took the unusual step of meeting with Paterson to ask him not to run for election next year.

Neither Paterson nor the White House denied the story.

It’s rare for the White House to involve itself in state or local politics — rare, but not unheard-of.  The White House was involved, for example, in the switch of parties of Pensylvania Sen. Arlen Specter earlier this year.  What’s rare is for the word to get out about the White House’s involvement.

CO: Former Republican Lt. Governor to Announce Run for Senate

From The Colorado Statesman:

Like a quickly changing game of musical chairs, candidates in Colorado’s U.S. Senate race are scrambling for position in a race that is changing almost daily.

On the Republican side, former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton will officially announce her candidacy for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday with an A-list group of state and national supporters and financial backers behind her. Her entrance into the race will likely overshadow the efforts of Weld County DA Ken Buck and Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier, both who have been campaigning for the 2010 Senate seat for the last several months.

A day later, former Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff, a widely respected Democrat from Denver who was term limited in 2008, will follow suit with his official announcement of candidacy for the U.S. Senate.
