New Lt. Governor in Utah

From The Salt Lake Tribune:

The Utah Senate unanimously confirmed state Sen. Greg Bell to be the state’s lieutenant governor, praising his selection and expressing respect for their departing colleague.

Sen. Lyle Hillyard, R-Logan, said he had some reluctance in voting for Bell, since he has been a trusted friend and colleague. “It will never be the same,” Hillyard said.

The outcome of the vote was a foregone conclusion, essentially since Gov. Gary Herbert selected the senator from Fruit Heights and former Farmington mayor to be his No. 2 last month.

In addressing his Senate colleagues after the 27-0 vote, Bell pledged to “show civility and respect for everyone.”

PA: Republican State Rep Running for Lt. Governor

From DailyTimes:

State Rep. Tom Killion has made official what has been whispered in Delco political circles for weeks: He wants to be lieutenant governor.

Killion, R-168, formally announced Tuesday that he has formed a state committee to explore a run for lieutenant governor in 2010. Killion said he has been encouraged by the feedback he has received from state and local elected officials, supporters, and party leaders.

“Pennsylvania is facing many critical challenges in the coming years and the 2010 election cycle is going to determine how we address these issues,” said Killion. “I believe strongly that we need to maintain fiscal responsibility on the state level while creating a better economic environment that allows businesses to grow, flourish, and create new jobs.”

VT: Lt. Governor Dubie Mulls Run For Governor

From BurlingtonFreePress.com:

Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie expects to take only a couple of weeks to make up his mind about running for governor in 2010 in the wake of incumbent Republican Gov. Jim Douglas’ decision not to seek a fifth term.

Dubie has asked Susie Hudson, who managed his 2008 campaign, to “structure my decision-making process.” His first meeting with supporters took place Saturday.

“There has been no decision,” Dubie stressed. “I need to invite people to help me make this decision,” he said. “I need to meet with people, discuss with people face-to-face and on the phone, and that is what I will be doing.”

VT: Who’ll Run for Governor for the GOP?

From RutlandHerald.com:

Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie, heir-apparent to the Republican Party’s departing standard-bearer, wouldn’t say Thursday whether he’ll seek the state’s top elected office in 2010.

But party officials insist they have plenty of viable candidates waiting in the wings as Republicans seek to fill the leadership void left by their four-term governor’s decision not to run again.

Minutes after Gov. James Douglas made his announcement, the issue of succession focused squarely on Dubie, who won the lieutenant governor’s office in 2000 and has enjoyed comfortable re-election margins ever since.

During an interview in his first-floor office, the Essex pilot and Air Force reservist said he’s not ready to announce yet whether he’ll seek to replace Douglas. Soon though, he promised, he’ll share his intentions with Vermont voters.

MA: Former Lt. Governor to run for Vacant Senate Seat?

From Boston.com:

Meanwhile, another name emerged yesterday as a possible contender. Republican Kerry Healey, the lieutenant governor under Mitt Romney who lost her gubernatorial bid to Patrick three years ago, is eyeing a run for the seat, according to a source familiar with her thinking. Healey has been in touch with the state Republican Party about a potential candidacy.

“She’s looking at it,’’ said the source, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. “She is talking to family and thinking about all of the different things involved, what it would take to run.’’

If Healey enters the race, it would add a well-known GOP name to a field that could include, on the Democratic side, several members of the US House and Attorney General Martha Coakley.

“We are talking to several different candidates,’’ Tarah Donoghue, a spokeswoman for the state GOP, said yesterday.

OK: State Senator Announces Run for Lieutenant Governor

From the Edmond Sun:

With a competitive optimism for Oklahoma to beat Texas in economic development, State Sen. Todd Lamb announced his 2010 candidacy for the office of lieutenant governor Wednesday morning.

“We don’t allow our coaches to say, ‘Texas is bigger. Texas has been around longer. Texas has more bulk.’ We don’t allow that,” Lamb told a crowd of more than 150 cheering supporters at the Jim Thorpe Museum in Oklahoma City. “Both with public policy and economic development, we’ve allowed that for way too long in our great state. It’s time for no more excuses.”

Lamb said only three of the 30 Oklahoma counties that border other states have a higher per capita income than their neighboring counties outside of Oklahoma. Public policy is the one difference between those bordering counties in comparison to their neighboring counties in other states, he said.

NY: Drama Continues – Appeals Court to Hear Lt. Governor Case

From Business First:

New York’s highest court will soon decide whether Gov. David Paterson can legally appoint a lieutenant governor.

The state Court of Appeals announced on Aug. 25 that it will hear an appeal from Paterson challenging a lower court ruling that prevents him from installing a lieutenant governor.

The Court of Appeals is expediting the case, with oral arguments scheduled for Sept. 11.

It is the latest in a string of legal actions sparked when Paterson attempted to appoint Richard Ravitch in early July, in an effort to end a five-week stalemate in the state Senate.

Florida Political Rivals Talk About Stuff

From Jacksonville.com:

Sink and McCollum make up two-thirds of the state Cabinet, which, along with Crist, oversees various state agencies including the Office of Insurance Regulation and departments of Revenue, Law Enforcement and Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. They also buy and sell state lands and serve as the Board of Executive Clemency. The governor, CFO and attorney general jointly invest more than $100 billion in state funds.

But they can’t talk about Cabinet business outside of prescheduled meetings that are open to the public. So as they flew to and from Tampa for the funeral of slain Tampa police officer Cpl. Mike Roberts, they were just three people talking about, well, just stuff.

Sink shared her Wall Street Journal with McCollum and later offered him half her sandwich (he politely declined). McCollum asked how Sink’s husband, former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill McBride, was doing. Sink told McCollum she had fun at a Tampa Bay Rays game the other day (she paid $60 for her ticket). McCollum mentioned his vacation to Banff in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Sink mentioned her time off on the North Carolina coast.
