Governor Paterson to Work for Obama?

From the HuffingtonPost.com:

The rumor that Barack Obama wants to appoint David Paterson to a job in his administration is almost as old as Paterson’s stint as governor. Since the vaguest part of the story is always the identity of the job (maybe an ambassadorship?) it’s safe to assume that the rumor is not springing from any pressing need for Paterson’s services in Washington, but rather from the deep desire of many New York Democrats to see him go away.

Strangely, for a man who has spent most of his adult life in the state senate, where politics means everything and policy next to nothing, Paterson’s biggest disasters have almost all been political. He botched the selection of Hillary Clinton’s successor. His staff wasn’t even savvy enough to pick a date for a special election to fill a state assembly seat without creating a crisis. And his decision last week to depict himself as a victim of racism seemed to suggest that Paterson, in his misery, has forgotten even the most basic rules of the way his chosen profession works.

NY: The 43 Day Lieutenant Governor

From the New York Times:

Richard Ravitch was meeting with the state insurance superintendent in his spartan Manhattan office on Thursday afternoon when he got an e-mail message informing him that a state appeals court had just ended Mr. Ravitch’s brief tenure as lieutenant governor — at least for now.

Unfazed by the ruling, which said that Gov. David A. Paterson had no constitutional authority to appoint Mr. Ravitch, the deposed lieutenant governor carried on into the evening with the work of immersing himself in the grim details of the state’s troubled finances.

This anticlimactic scene — possibly Mr. Ravitch’s last moment as lieutenant governor — was a far cry from his swearing-in over Scotch and rib-eyes at Peter Luger Steak House in Brooklyn last month.

RI: Republican Nixes Run for Lt. Governor

From Projo.com

Mayor Scott Avedisian announced Friday morning that he will not seek the lieutenant governor’s office next year, but he left open the possibility of running for another political position.

The six-term Republican mayor was responding to speculation that he was planning to campaign for the seat currently held by Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts. Roberts has said she will seek reelection in 2010.

“Over the course of the past few months, I have been approached by numerous supporters urging me to consider running for the office of lieutenant governor,” Avedisian said in a statement. “After a thoughtful and thorough examination of this opportunity, I have decided not to run for lieutenant governor because I believe I can better serve the interests of my constituents in Warwick as well as the people of Rhode Island in another role.”

The Reshaping of the GOP

From the Christian Science Monitor:

There’s a slight spring in the step of Republicans these days. President Obama is stumbling on health reform and his job approval rating is sinking. Suddenly, life in the wilderness doesn’t look so bleak to a GOP that got trounced in the last two elections and was, to some, staring possible extinction in the face.

The party could well take two key governorships – New Jersey and Virginia – away from the Democrats in November.

Recruiting for next year’s House, Senate, and gubernatorial races has gotten easier, in anticipation of midterm elections that historically favor the out-of-power party.

NY: Court Says No to Governor’s Lt. Governor Appointment

From PostStar.com:

An appeals court Thursday struck down Gov. David Paterson’s appointment of a lieutenant governor, upholding a constitutional challenge to a move spurred by a paralyzing political drama in the state Senate.

The decision at least temporarily prevents longtime government adviser Richard Ravitch from serving as the state’s second-highest executive, though the case is expected to go on to the state’s highest court, the Court of Appeals.

The appellate panel said no state law or constitutional provision allows the lieutenant governor’s post to be filled by anything but an election, making the appointment unlawful.

The decision upheld a lower court’s order blocking Ravitch from holding the post, an order that had been stayed while the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division considered the case.

Republican Lt. Governor Hopeful Touts Experience

From Erie-Times News:

Republican Carol Aichele believes she can be the kind of lieutenant governor Pennsylvania needs right now.

Aichele said her background at various levels of government — which includes serving as Chester County’s controller and as a school board member in southeastern Pennsylvania — makes her a fiscally responsible politician interested in low taxes, job creation and prudent government spending.

WI: Expect Many Runners in Governor Race

On the Republican side, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and former U.S. Representative Mark Neumann have already officially made their bid, as well as Appleton resident Mark Todd, Bill Ingram, and John Schiess.

But what could become a major game-changer on the GOP ticket is if former governor Tommy Thompson decides to run again. Thompson and a former aide tell the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel they’re both considering a run.

If you think the list is convoluted now, just wait.

“We’re going to have many more people running for governor a month from now,” Dale said.

Nevada Lt. Governor Running for Re-election

From RGJ.com:

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki said Monday he will seek a second term next year, eschewing a bid for higher office as he continues to fight a felony indictment for mishandling millions of dollars in the Nevada College Savings Program when he was state treasurer.

Krolicki has been calling campaign donors and others in political circles to put the word out that he’s running as other candidates, including Reno Councilwoman Jessica Sferrazza, a Democrat, begin eyeing the race.

“This is the right decision,” Krolicki said. “I’ve loved being lieutenant governor. I enjoy the economic development and tourism responsibilities. This is the right thing for me to do.”
