TN LG Ramsey Sees Untapped Pool in Hispanic Vote
Last Updated on Friday, 1 May 2009 01:07 Written by rslcpol Friday, 1 May 2009 01:07
From the Tennessean:
The Republican National Hispanic Assembly of Tennessee hosted a night with Ramsey to help reclaim Hispanics for the Republican Party. The $100 per person event was held at La Hacienda restaurant in Franklin. About 60 people attended.
“Maybe we did lose some footing, but that’s what I’d like to be able to correct on a national level,” Ramsey said.
“I think here in Tennessee we’ll be able to change that. First, you have to start with outreach and tell them where you stand and what your views are not only as a person but as a party, too.”

TN: LG Ramsey Seeks Deal on Judicial Selections
Last Updated on Friday, 1 May 2009 02:11 Written by rslcpol Friday, 1 May 2009 12:50
Judicial selection is a tremendous issue – not just in Tennessee. This is one of those issues that percolates a bit below the surface, but the folks who follow it – do so religiously. From the Tennessean:
The Blountville Republican wants to eliminate the state’s Judicial Selection Commission that is set to expire June 30 and let the governor independently fill all vacancies. He is also calling for current justices to stand in contested re-election campaigns.
A rival measure advancing in the House would keep in place the current system of having justices stand for yes-no retention elections when their terms end.
The House bill would also remove control by legal groups such as the state bar association, defense lawyers and prosecutors over who serves on the 17-member Judicial Selection Commission that is responsible for presenting candidates for the governor to choose from — a proposal Ramsey supported last year.

VA: McDonnell and Bolling Present Energy Plans
Last Updated on Tuesday, 28 April 2009 11:18 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 28 April 2009 10:50
It’s hard to argue against finding a responsible, safe way to establish energy independence – which is what former GOP A.G. Bob McDonnell and GOP L.G. Bill Bolling are talking about here. Both of these men are working to bring more jobs to Virginia. Unlike their Democrat counterparts – these leaders are taking a stand and being for something important to the future of the Commonwealth of Virginia. From the Richmond Times Dispatch:
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling unveiled twin energy plans yesterday that call for drilling for oil and natural gas off the coast of Virginia.
McDonnell, at a stop in Norfolk, and Bolling, across the state in Roanoke, said Virginia must take advantage of traditional sources of energy — coal and nuclear power as well as oil and gas — while promoting alternative-energy sources.
They said they want to make Virginia the energy capital of the East Coast.
Bolling, a Republican, is seeking re-election as lieutenant governor. He is running in tandem with McDonnell.
Because Virginia is the second-largest importer of electricity, after California, it must develop the energy sources it has in abundance, such as oil and coal, McDonnell said.

GA: LG Cagle Undergoes Disc Surgery
Last Updated on Tuesday, 28 April 2009 10:30 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 28 April 2009 10:30
From Atlanta Business Chronicle:
Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle underwent successful surgery Monday for a degenerative disc problem he cited two weeks ago in dropping out of the race for governor.
The Gainesville Republican was in recovery late Monday afternoon after what the Emory Healthcare surgeon who performed the operation described as a “technically exacting procedure” to repair damage to his spinal cord and nerve roots that began causing him severe pain and some partial paralysis late in this year’s General Assembly session.
As lieutenant governor, Cagle presides over the Senate, a job that entails standing for long periods of time.

He likes “most types of music.” His favorite movies are “Braveheart” and “Gladiator.” His favorite books are “historical novels about our founding fathers.”
How did this guy get 1,251 Facebook friends?
AL: LG Running for Reelection has Domino Effect
Last Updated on Thursday, 23 April 2009 10:46 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 23 April 2009 10:46
The AtmoreAdvance:
The decision by Jim Folsom Jr. to run for reelection as Lt. Governor, rather than seeking to be promoted to Governor, is having a domino effect on the 2010 elections. As we speak, there is a shuffling and realignment going on among both parties’ aspirants in next year’s races.
The players are beginning to enter the stage, but maybe in a different costume or robe than initially planned. The lineup will be primarily complete within the next two months as fundraising can begin in mid June. The period from July to January will be like spring training and fall practice preparing for the political season of 2010.
The first and foremost Democratic candidate to announce is our only African American Congressman Artur Davis. Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks was waiting for Folsom to make his decision. He has been chomping at the bit to get started. Sparks decided early on that he would avoid Folsom and make the race that Folsom opted out of. So, he is now officially in the Governor’s race.

CA: LG Gives Up on Governor’s Race; Running for Congress
Last Updated on Wednesday, 22 April 2009 09:35 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 22 April 2009 09:35
From the LA Times:
The San Francisco mayor’s entrance into the race came as the only other official Democratic candidate, Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, prepared to switch to a race for Congress. According to sources close to him, Garamendi is expected to announce shortly that he will seek the seat to be vacated by Rep. Ellen O. Tauscher (D-Alamo) after she takes a State Department post later this year. His race for governor has been crippled by fundraising difficulties.
Newsom is seeking the governorship by overtly adopting the generational and technology-savvy approach that marked Barack Obama’s successful presidential campaign. The 41-year-old mayor was none too subtle in an announcement video that appeared on his website.

Alabama State Senator to run for Lieutenant Governor
Last Updated on Monday, 20 April 2009 11:04 Written by rslcpol Monday, 20 April 2009 11:04
From Montgomery Advertiser:
Erwin, 60, is the first Republican to announce a bid for lieutenant governor, whose duties include presiding over the Senate.
He said Alabama voters view the Democrat-controlled Senate as a group that can’t get along and can’t get much done — except for raising its own pay.
“If you are going to improve things, you’ve got to change the leadership of the Alabama Senate,” he told about 100 people at the Pelham Civic Center.

GA: LG Cagle’s Gamechanger
Last Updated on Monday, 20 April 2009 10:38 Written by rslcpol Monday, 20 April 2009 10:38
From the Augusta Chronicle:
So instead of storming someone else’s castle next year, he’ll be defending his own and run for re-election as lieutenant governor.
Cagle’s emotional withdrawal from the governor’s race was a temblor in Georgia politics, and is shaking up the political landscape like you can’t believe. He was, after all, the leading money-raiser and a consensus Republican frontrunner in the race to replace term-limited Gov. Sonny Perdue.
Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine and Secretary of State Karen Handel now seem the frontrunners in the gubernatorial sweepstakes, although others are expected to jump in. House Speaker Pro-Tem Mark Burkhalter may take the dive on the Republican side.
