Ohio Democrat Secretary of State Trails LG in Fundraising Race

From Cleveland.com:

Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner trails her Democratic rival in fund-raising in their battle to become the party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate next year.

Brunner reported on Wednesday that she raised $207,000 in the first six weeks of her campaign, as expected far less than the more than $1 million raised by Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher.

Candidates seeking to replace retiring Republican Sen. George Voinovich were required to file their first-quarter campaign reports with the Federal Elections Commission.

Virginia Signer Petitions in Question

Do petitions bring down another Democrat L.G. candidate?  From the Washington Post:

About 400 of the 13,354 signatures provided to the Virginia State Board of Elections by lieutenant governor candidate Michael Signer are missing required information, according to state and Democratic party officials.

If the 4,000 signatures are thrown out, his name would not appear on the ballot.

The state requires candidates to submit at least 10,000 signatures, including those of least 400 registered voters in each of Virginia’s 11 congressional districts, to be on the June 9 Democratic primary ballot.

GA: LG Drops Out of Governor’s Race

Casey CagleFrom ajc:

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, a leading Republican contender for governor in 2010, dropped out of the race Wednesday.

Cagle told reporters he has had back and neck pain for several years, but it progressed during the 2009 session to the point where he had some paralysis. He tried therapy, but was advised that he needed surgery.

“I’ve been diagnosed with some serious nerve and bone problems and a degenerative spinal condition,” he told reporters at a Capitol news conference.  ” The issue could be hereditary or it could be the result of an old injury, but the unfortunate reality is that it requires immediate surgical treatment.”

LG’s Lawyers Want AG Pulled Off Case; “Abomination of Due Process”

So try and follow along.  The Democrat A.G. is prosecuting the Republican L.G. (who is a likely challenger to the incumbent Democrat U.S. Senator) for following the legal advice from the Democrat A.G. herself.  Is that circular or what?  Never mind how insanely political it all appears to be.  From Review Jounral:

“This prosecution is, therefore, an abomination of due process and the ethical duty of a prosecutor to seek justice,” attorney Richard Wright said in a brief filed in Clark County District Court.

Masto contends that what Krolicki’s lawyers see as a conflict for her is something that courts have allowed for attorneys general across the nation.

Wright maintains that several current and former deputy attorneys general provided Krolicki with legal advice regarding the college savings program when he was serving as state treasurer and overseeing the program, and Krolicki relied on their advice.

Virginia Democrat LG Candidate Fails to Get Enough Signatures; Out of Race

From Richmond Times Dispatch:

Pat Edmonson will not be a Democratic candidate for the nomination to run for lieutenant governor.

The little-known Virginia Beach school board member failed to file the required 10,000 signatures with the State Board of Elections today to get her name on the ballot. Today was the deadline for filing to be a candidate in the June 9 primary.

Edmonson did not return phone calls, but she is said to be considering running for the state Senate seat in Virginia Beach that is being vacated by Kenneth W. Stolle, a Republican who is running for sheriff of Virginia Beach.

Filing today was Jon Bowerbank, a Russell County supervisor and businessman, who led all statewide candidates, including candidates for governor, with 18,133 signatures.

Memo to Virginia Reporters on RSLC and 527 Financial Disclosures

For IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 8, 2009

PressReleaseLOGO

TO:                 Virginia Reporters

FROM:           Carrie Cantrell
Director of Communications, Republican State Leadership Committee

DATE:            Wednesday, April 8, 2009

RE:                 RSLC and 527 Financial Disclosures

As you know, a new group “Common Sense Virginia” has been established to attack former Republican Attorney General Bob McDonnell in his campaign for Governor.  As a result, 527s and the involvement of the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) in the 2005 Virginia Attorney General race have subsequently been mentioned in two recent articles.  It is important for you to understand our organization, how we report, the reforms we have supported, and the steps we have taken to be as transparent as possible.

Since 2002, the RSLC has been active in down-ballot races for Attorneys General, and has grown to include legislators, Lieutenant Governors and Secretaries of State.  Unlike other 527 organizations that set up just for one election, we are a professionally run organization focused on making a national impact one state at a time through helping to increase the number of Republicans in these offices – building a farm team for the future.

NY: Majority Says Democrat Paterson Should Not Run for Re-Election

Pack it up, pack it in.  It’s time for Paterson to begin…not running for re-election – according to Empire State voters.  From The Record:

For months, Gov. David Paterson’s approval rating has been plummeting among New York state voters. On Monday, a newly released poll indicated that, not only do state residents deem Paterson unworthy of another term in the Governor’s Mansion, but that he should remove his name from the 2010 election altogether.

According to a poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, 60 percent of registered New York voters disapprove of Paterson’s performance, with 63 percent claiming that he does not deserve to be re-elected at the end of his term.

CA: LG Hires Liberal Radio Host as Message Consultant

How long does the Garamendi campaign last?  Anybody out there care to wager?  From CapitolAlert:

A week after losing his senior campaign advisor, Lt. Gov. and gubernatorial hopeful John Garamendi has a new “messaging and communications consultant.”

The Garamendi for Governor 2010 has turned a veteran liberal talk show host, Peter B. Collins, who most recently was the voice of the Peter B. Collins Show on KRXA 540-AM in Monterey. Collins, 55, who started in radio in Chicago in the 1970s, went on to host Bay Area talk programs on ABC-owned KGO-AM and CBS-owned KRQR.

Crowded Field for Alabama Governor? Not So Much

From AL.com:

With still a lot of time until next year’s party primaries – 423 days – the races in both parties have been most notable for who’s gotten out, not who’s gotten in.

There’s one exception, U.S. Rep. Artur Davis of Birmingham. Two months ago he jumped into the race on the Democratic side and in doing so made national news. Davis is seeking to become the state’s first African-American governor.

The list of those who have opted not to run has grown much faster than that of who is running. The count-me-out list includes Speaker of the House Seth Hammett, Congressman Jo Bonner, Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Attorney General Troy King, Public Service Commissioner Susan Parker and one big new name last week – Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom Jr.

GA: 2010 Campaign Trail Heating Up

From the AP:

The 2010 general election is 19 months away, an eternity in politics. But as this year’s legislative session drew to a close, the jockeying already had begun among the state’s power brokers.

Contests will range from one of Georgia’s U.S. Senate seats to all 236 state legislative positions. But the governor’s race clearly is shaping up as the main attraction. Six candidates already have jumped into the fray, and several more – including former Gov. Roy Barnes – are considering bids.
