IL: Blago’s Successor Trails AG Madigan in Potential Governor Primary

From The Hill:

Blagojevich has been accused of trying to sell the seat for his personal gain. He was removed from office by the state legislature, and several top Democrats have called for Burris’s resignation.

The poll also tested a potential GOP primary and found Rep. Mark Kirk leading Rep. Peter Roskam, 26-21.

In the governor’s race, Blagojevich’s successor, former Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn (D), trailed state Attorney General Lisa Madigan in a potential primary, 41-30.

MI: Panel Recommends Paycut for Politicians

From Examiner.com:

The governor’s $177,000 salary, third-most among governors, would be $159,300 – though Gov. Jennifer Granholm already is voluntarily giving back 10 percent of her pay this year. She returned 10 percent to the state treasury in her first year in office and 5 percent every year after.

“At a time when we are asking state employees to sacrifice, yet again, it is only fair that we lead by example,” the Democratic governor said in a statement.

She said she is disappointed the changes cannot take effect until the next term begins in 2011 – because of the process outlined in the Michigan Constitution – but she encouraged other officials to voluntarily give back some of their salary.

Virginia LG Race – Bolling New Ideas

Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey – “Force to Be Reckoned With”

 ramsey

Commentary from A.C. Kleinheider in the Nashville City Paper:

Ramsey is in many ways a perfect synthesis of his two major opponents. Wamp is a conservative. He can deliver the red meat and push those hot buttons in the perfect combination on the stump to get the base pumped. But he has little in terms of executive experience and he has not shown much of the pragmatic leadership most folks want to see in a Governor.

Haslam, Ramsey’s other major opponent, is the polar opposite. The textbook example of a studied, pragmatic executive leader, Haslam has a tin ear when it comes to the ideological base of the modern TNGOP. While Tennessee Republicans have time and again embraced the moderate Republicans in the Howard Baker mold, most of these moderates at least attempted to feign rock-ribbed allegiance to movement conservatism.

Haslam has yet to show that willingness and clearly lacks the fire for issues that animate conservative primary voters.

VA: Dem Political Consultant Drops Bid for LG

From VivianPage:

Rich Savage, the Richmond political consultant, has decided to suspend his campaign for lieutenant governor.

In a phone call this morning, Savage said he is proud of the race that he ran. He leaves with his head held high, having  “raised the bar” on the issues, particularly his passion, education. Savage said that ecomonic conditions have made the race difficult and he doesn’t see anything changing.

TN: LG Ron Ramsey Starts the Conversation; Testing the Governor Race Waters

From the Tennessean:

Forming an exploratory committee is the first step in running for governor. State election laws bar legislators from taking or asking for campaign contributions while the General Assembly is in session, and Ramsey said he plans to tour the state before making a final decision whether to run.

“This is a way of signaling to folks that he’s ready to have this conversation,” said Brad Todd, a spokesman for the exploratory committee.

Nevada AG and LG Continue Exchange of Words

It’s just shocking that the Democrat A.G. doesn’t see any conflict from her action against the GOP Lieutenant Governor…this action hasn’t been tainted with politics from the beginning…oh wait.  From the Nevada Appeal:

Nevada’s attorney general said Tuesday there’s no basis for a claim by the state’s lieutenant governor that she should be disqualified from prosecuting him on charges that he mishandled a multibillion-dollar state college savings program.

Asked to respond to the claim in a motion filed by Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, a spokeswoman for Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said that what Krolicki’s lawyers see as a conflict for Masto is something that courts have allowed for attorneys general across the country.

“We don’t believe we have a conflict,” added Masto spokeswoman Edie Cartwright. “We will file our opposition to the motion (by Krolicki) and we will litigate this in court if we need to.”

KS: Lt. Gov. Parkinson Prepares to take the Governor’s Office

From CJOnline:

“While I realize there are large numbers of people in the state who don’t know who the lieutenant governor is, I want them to be assured that I’m ready to serve when that time comes,” Parkinson said.

Timing of the transition is unclear, Parkinson said, because Senate confirmation hearings for Sebelius have yet to be scheduled. A Senate vote on President Barack Obama’s nomination of Sebelius might not be completed for several weeks.

Parkinson, 51, reiterated during a news conference he wouldn’t seek a full term as governor in 2010.

IA: Dems Start Using State Email after Scrutiny

From IdahoStatesman:

Culver aides had said the governor and Lt. Gov. Patty Judge used private e-mail accounts and computers to ensure they didn’t violate state laws banning public officials from using public e-mail accounts for political or personal purposes.

But public records advocates had scoffed at their claims.

“Why doesn’t the governor just use his state e-mail account for government matters and his private account for personal and family matters and err on the side of disclosure?” asked Herb Strentz, a retired professor at Drake University in Des Moines who studies public records issues.

Paparazzi Politics

From SFGate:

Now, the guru behind the gossip-rich TMZ cable and Internet franchise is expanding into a whole new universe.

Call it paparazzi politics.

“We cover sports figures, chefs and people who are famous for all sorts of reasons … and some of them are in politics,” Levin told The Chronicle last week, a week in which TMZ.com named an Illinois representative the nation’s “hottest congressman” and broke a national story about bailed-out bank executives hiring singer Sheryl Crow for their lavish party in Los Angeles.
