From the Columbus Dispatch:
A high-stakes Democratic showdown is in the offing for 2010 after yesterday’s announcements by Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher that they will seek the party’s nomination to succeed retiring Republican U.S. Sen. George V. Voinovich.
If both candidates stay in the race, Gov. Ted Strickland will be forced to find a new running mate next year and Brunner’s seat on the crucial State Apportionment Board will be left undefended by an incumbent.

From Nashville Post Politics:
Bredesen was greeted on the floor of the House Chamber by Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey who handed him a small gift. The “gift” was a bottle cap with a fortune written on the inside that read, “An important position shall soon be yours.” Should Bredesen get the HHS job, Ramsey would become governor.

Ohio LG Fisher Looks at 2010 Run for Senate
Last Updated on Tuesday, 10 February 2009 01:33 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 10 February 2009 01:13
Now, will Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner jump in and take Fisher on? Might be quite an undertaking; After all, Governor Strickland likes Fisher for the job.
From the Columbus Dispatch:
Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher took another step yesterday toward becoming an official U.S. Senate candidate in 2010.
The Ohio Democrat has formed a federal exploratory committee that will allow him to investigate “how to become the most effective partner with Gov. (Ted) Strickland and Sen. (Sherrod) Brown (D-Ohio) in turning around Ohio’s economy,” said a spokesman for the exploratory committee.
Fisher has no time frame for launching a formal Senate bid.

From the St. Petersburg Times:
Florida’s budget crisis may be too severe to continue the cost of supplying a round-the-clock security guard and personal escort for Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp, the Senate budget chief said Monday.
“I haven’t learned about too many lieutenant governors being accosted lately,” said Sen. J.D. Alexander, the chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee.

CA: Republican and Former Ebay CEO Meg Whitman Launches Exploratory Bid for Governor
Last Updated on Monday, 9 February 2009 02:45 Written by rslcpol Monday, 9 February 2009 02:29
Will she be running against Democrat Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi?? Democrat A.G. Jerry Brown??
From LA Times:
Former EBay Chief Executive Meg Whitman joined the race for governor of California this morning, setting off a battle between Silicon Valley moguls for the 2010 Republican nomination.
Whitman, 52, has never run for public office, but is banking that Californians will see her corporate background as just what the state needs to break its chronic cycle of fiscal disasters.
California faces challenges unlike any other time in its history — a weak and faltering economy, massive job losses, and an exploding state budget deficit,” Whitman said in a written statement. “California is better than this, and I refuse to stand by and watch it fail.”

TN: GOP LG Ramsey – Legislation that Costs Money Won’t Pass
Last Updated on Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:19 Written by rslcpol Monday, 9 February 2009 10:29
Tennessee must balance its budget. The state constitution requires it. If you click on the “read the rest” link below, and then scroll to the bottom of the article, you can view Republican and Democrat legislators from Tennessee talk about the budget crisis and what they must do to solve it for Tennessee. From the Chattanooga Times Free Press:
In the view of Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, one thing should be very clear when lawmakers reconvene today.
“I think people get it that any legislation that costs money won’t pass this year,” said Lt. Gov. Ramsey, the Senate speaker.
Any number of issues including efforts by district attorneys general and police chiefs to boost prison penalties for criminals who use guns will receive the same treatment, Lt. Gov. Ramsey said.
Tennessee currently faces the need to trim up to $900 million in spending from the yet-to-be presented 2009-10 budget as a result of its recession-battered revenues.

New Mexico – He’s Your Huckleberry, Val Kilmer Considers Run for Governor
Last Updated on Friday, 6 February 2009 12:32 Written by rslcpol Friday, 6 February 2009 10:58
Kilmer could throw a bit of a monkey wrench into democrat Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish’s plan. She’s already running for the top spot. Hey, it could’ve been worse – it could’ve been Christian Bale.
“It’s really day to day,” he said over tea at a local restaurant.
Kilmer, 49, grew up in Los Angeles but has called New Mexico home for more than two decades. He’s currently registered as a Democrat and said he cast a ballot for Barack Obama from Bulgaria, where he was filming.
A Kilmer candidacy could throw a monkey wrench into the well-oiled Democratic machine of Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, who’s already running for the job.
Actually, if “Doc Holiday” winds up getting into this race, it could get really interesting – more interesting than any other Govs race if it happens this way…

IL: Former LG now Governor Quinn May Keep Some Blago Directors
Last Updated on Friday, 6 February 2009 12:42 Written by rslcpol Friday, 6 February 2009 10:49
It will be very interesting to watch as Quinn tries to extricate himself from his predecessor, while at the same time not tossing out the good along with the bad. Sounds like a political hot potato nobody would want to catch. All eyes on 2010. From Southtown Star:
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn put his own stamp on the Department of Natural Resources by announcing a new director Thursday, but he left open the possibility that some of his predecessor’s Cabinet officers might keep their jobs.
Quinn chose Marc Miller as the new conservation director. The 39-year-old Springfield resident was senior policy adviser to Quinn when he was lieutenant governor.
But Quinn didn’t rule out keeping some agency directors appointed by disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. “If they’re doing a good job and it’s best for the people, that’s what we’ll do,” he said at a news conference outside his Springfield office.

OK: LG Wants to form Children’s Cabinet
Last Updated on Friday, 6 February 2009 12:45 Written by rslcpol Friday, 6 February 2009 10:41
It would be good if Jari Askins delivered on her ’06 campaign promises before she gets too far down the road on the ’10 campaign. From NewsOK:
Legislation has been filed to develop a cabinet, or council, to look into children’s issues and develop strategies to help deliver services, Lt. Gov. Jari Askins said Thursday.
Askins, who talked about forming a children’s cabinet during her 2006 lieutenant governor campaign, said two bills have been filed this year to form the Oklahoma Children’s Cabinet. The measures are Senate Bill 697 and House Bill 1655.
