MD: AG to Join Obama Administration?
Last Updated on Thursday, 5 February 2009 03:00 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 5 February 2009 01:19
From Maryland Politics:
O’Malleywatch is up with renewed speculation about the possibility that Attorney General Doug Gansler might be leaving for a job in the Obama administration. That rumor has been kicking around for a while because Gansler was a big and early Obama supporter in Maryland and is a former federal prosecutor.
It wouldn’t be all that surprising to see him take a job in the justice department, particularly if he got something big in enviornmental law or one of the other issues he focuses on the most. On the other hand, Gansler has been raising a lot of money for a re-election bid — enough to scare off competitors and set himself up as a front-runner for governor in 2014. Going to the federal government would definitely take him out of that mix.

CT: The Age of Exploration… for Gubernatorial Runs
Last Updated on Wednesday, 4 February 2009 04:11 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 4 February 2009 11:12
Now if only Dick “Richard” Blumenthal would run…he won’t. From the Hartford Courant:
It’s the age of exploration.
Stamford Mayor Dannel P. Malloy created an exploratory committee Tuesday that will allow him to finance the early stages of a campaign for governor.
Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz did the same thing Monday, a development she announced by e-mail hours before Malloy addressed supporters and reporters about his filing.
Exploratory committees suddenly have become a crucial political tool in Connecticut, where new campaign finance laws limit how much can be raised by declared candidates.

GOP Eyes 2010 Races
Last Updated on Wednesday, 4 February 2009 10:41 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 4 February 2009 10:41
From Stateline.org:
After winning the White House, taking control of Congress and securing majorities of the governorships and the state legislatures over the past two years, the Democrats are on a roll. But will their luck run out in the 2010 gubernatorial elections?
Two governorships will be up in 2009, followed by the mother lode of 36 in 2010. And on the macro level, the Democrats have reason for concern.

Last Updated on Tuesday, 3 February 2009 04:58 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 3 February 2009 11:13
Now this will mix things up in Florida in 2010. You’ll probably see Republican L.G. Jeff Kottkamp and Republican A.G. Bill McCollum taking a good look at the 2010 governor’s contest should Governor Crist decide to move on. From USA Today On Politics:
Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is providing grist for a lot of speculation today. It all centers on whether he’ll run for the Senate, setting off a domino effect in his state.

MD: Lieutenant Governor Brown Pushes for Gun Restrictions
Last Updated on Monday, 2 February 2009 11:53 Written by rslcpol Monday, 2 February 2009 11:53
From the Baltimore Sun:
The District of Columbia elementary school teacher had not sought a protective order against Wilson, but the lieutenant governor said the experience left him with a new urgency to protect victims of domestic violence.
“I’m not saying this would have protected her specifically, but it would protect many Marylanders in years to come,” Brown said last week.
Maryland law does not give judges the authority to take guns when a temporary protective order is granted. Judges can confiscate guns when granting a final order but are not required to.

Virginia Election Puts Pressure on New DNC Chair
Last Updated on Thursday, 29 January 2009 01:44 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 29 January 2009 11:36
Democrat activist are less than enthused by Tim Kaine’s chairmanship of the DNC. To quote:
“I don’t think Obama could have picked a more boring, less exciting person than Tim Kaine,” Marcos Moulitsas, founder of Daily Kos, an influential liberal blog, said in an interview last week. “But we have the White House. We have the Senate. We have the House. So no one really cares much about Kaine.”
You can’t help but sense just the teeniest bit of arrogance oozing from some Democrats. From the Washington Post:
Unlike some past GOP candidates in Virginia, McDonnell starts the campaign with a unified Republican base.
McDonnell, who will run on a ticket with Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling (R), can spend the next 10 months reaching out to suburban voters in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. (He grew up in Fairfax County and has spent his adult life in Virginia Beach.) McDonnell also plans to reach out to African American voters.
Although they are conservative, McDonnell and Bolling say they have learned from GOP losses. In other words, don’t expect them to be talking about such divisive issues as abortion on the campaign trail. At a dinner with Washington Post reporters last week, Bolling stressed that he sponsored Virginia’s child health insurance program when he was in the state Senate in the late 1990s.

Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn is in a bit of a tricky spot, getting ready to take over a job currently held by someone on the verge of getting fired.
With the seemingly imminent departure of Gov. Rod Blagojevich, the 60-year-old Quinn stands poised to become Illinois’ new chief executive as soon as today.
Quinn believes his educational and professional background, including an economics degree from Georgetown University and experience as state treasurer and lieutenant governor, makes him well-suited for the challenges ahead.
