KS: Dem LG Not Running for Governor Anytime Soon

The former Republican state party chairman thinks twice about running for Governor as a Democrat.  Maybe he figured that the Democrat primary race would be brutal for someone who once ran the Kansas Republican Party.  No more brutal than if he ever tries to run as a Republican again.  The Democrat Governor’s choice of Parkinson in ’06 to be her running mate may be one of the more politically short sighted moves we’ve seen in a long time.   So much for continuing her legacy after she’s out of office.  From LJWorld.com:

Democratic Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson announced Friday he would not run for governor or any office in two years, opting instead to return to the private sector.

The announcement added another shakeup to Kansas politics before the 2010 election.

“I admire those who are willing and able to make the sacrifices to serve the public for their entire careers, but, I’m not one of them,” Parkinson said.

IL: Lt. Gov. Calls His State “Laughing Stock”

Yes, corruption is fought by having meetings.  Excellent strategy.  Notify America in 2111 what you find out.  From the AP:

Illinois’ lieutenant governor says his state has become an “international laughing stock” and he wants to form a panel to find ways to clean up corruption.

Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn told WLS radio Monday that the public’s highest priority should be urging scandal-tainted Gov. Rod Blagojevich (bluh-GOY’-uh-vitch) to resign.

Blog: IL LG Quinn Fundraiser Update

From the Chicago Reader:

Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn held a fund-raiser Monday night—but he refused to accept any funds at it. Quinn spokesman Bob Reed said Quinn “didn’t feel it was appropriate” to throw a check-collecting party while the country is waiting to find out the latest sordid details in the state’s latest pay-to-play scandal. Instead, Reed said, the gathering “became a holiday reception.”

But that doesn’t mean the lieutenant governor won’t receive donations at other times. Interest in Quinn has grown in proportion to disgust with embattled governor Rod Blagojevich; expect the money to flow in even faster if impeachment proceedings against Blagojevich move along.

VA: GOP LG Reponds to Dem Gov Budget

From WHSV:

“Earlier this year I voluntarily reduced my office budget by 8.8 percent to help address the budget shortfall. Additionally, I returned five percent of my budget to the state treasury in 2007 to mitigate the effects of the previous budget deficit.

“However, I am very concerned by the Governor’s proposal to increase taxes by $167 million. Throughout this process, the Governor has repeatedly promised to balance the budget through spending cuts, not tax increases; and it is very disappointing to see him renege on this promise. The people of Virginia expect their leaders to keep their word, not break their promises.”

SC: LG Has New Fundraising Pitch

From CRBJ:

I did a full check. I ran the whole thing by the Ethics Commission,” Bauer said. “This is as transparent as it gets. Nobody else in politics would be willing to expose themselves like this.”

At Andre’s Christmas, Bauer is offering a three-day weekend at the lieutenant governor’s private home on Rutledge Street in downtown Charleston for $3,250.

There’s a skeet- and wing-shooting trip for three at a log lodge in the Carolina foothills that includes a guide and dogs, lunch and cleaning and packaging of birds for $1,000.

SC: Judge Doesn’t Believe “I Believe” Plates Legal

From the Columbia Free Times:

When the General Assembly passed a bill in June allowing the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles to create a license plate with an emblem of a cross on it and the words “I Believe,” it was pretty clear it wouldn’t be long before the state wound up in a court battle centered on separation of church and state.

Sure enough, shortly after Gov. Mark Sanford allowed the bill to become law — without his signature — Washington, D.C.-based Americans United for Separation of Church and State sued the state in U.S. District Court. Americans United (AU) claimed the state-sanctioned plate unconstitutionally endorsed one religion over another.

TX: Roll Call Reports Cornyn Prefers Abbott for Hutchison Senate Seat

Lots of state Republicans mentioned in this Roll Call piece.  Among them, Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott, and Republican Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst.  From the Roll Call:

Sen. John Cornyn Texas, the incoming National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman, would like to see his former colleague on the Texas Supreme Court, state Attorney General Greg Abbott (R), succeed Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R) should she resign her seat to run for governor in 2010.

Sources have confirmed Cornyn’s interest in Abbott, with GOP insiders close to the state attorney general acknowledging on Wednesday that he is weighing a Senate bid based on entreaties for him to run that have come from top Republicans both in Washington, D.C., and in Texas.

PA: State Rep Eyes Lieutenant Governor Post

From the Morning Call:

You can add one more potential candidacy to the swirl of speculation coming out of last weekend’s annual Pennsylvania Society gala in Manhattan.

State Rep. Karen Beyer, R-Lehigh, said Monday that she’s ”very seriously considering” whether to seek the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor in 2010 and will make up her mind sometime in the next 60 days.

”I still have the legwork of talking to people,” said Beyer, 46, who was re-elected without opposition last month to a third term representing Allentown’s 131st District.

IL: LG Quinn “Grabs at Reins”

Poor Patrick Quinn – he’s stuck between the rock (no, not him) and a hard place.  Demand to appoint – and the appointment is 100% suspect from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (Hello, Chief of Staff’s office) all the way to the first political contribution he takes in a Governor.  Wait for the election, and have this guy, this guy, this guy, and maybe even this gal mad because the Dems lose a seat and a major political symbol.  Tough spot to be in.  From Chicago Tribune:

Lt. Gov. Patrick Quinn pulled a power play Thursday, calling on state lawmakers to immediately impeach Gov. Rod Blagojevich so that he could quickly replace the governor and select Illinois’ next U.S. senator.

“It is an urgent matter,” Quinn said. “This is an emergency. Illinois is in a crisis.”

Quinn’s plea came amid a growing call from rank-and-file House lawmakers to start impeachment proceedings, turning up the pressure on Blagojevich to resign. The governor, who has remained publicly silent, came to work in Chicago for the second straight day since the FBI hauled him away in handcuffs before dawn Tuesday.
