IL: LG Says His First Assignment Would be to Appoint Senator
Last Updated on Friday, 12 December 2008 11:49 Written by rslcpol Friday, 12 December 2008 11:49
From Chicago Sun Times:
Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn said today if he becomes governor, his “first assignment” would be appointing a successor to Barack Obama, and he urged state legislators to launch impeachment proceedings against Gov. Blagojevich next week if he doesn’t resign before then.
Quinn stopped short of saying he would veto legislation to establish a special election next spring to fill the state’s vacant U.S. Senate seat, but he cited the multimillion-dollar expense of holding a vote and the fact it conceivably might not be resolved until June as reasons he might move on his own to anoint an Obama successor if Blagojevich departs.

Illinois: Will the Lieutenant Governor Pick the Attorney General for Obama’s Seat?
Last Updated on Thursday, 11 December 2008 09:19 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 11 December 2008 09:19
From the Chicago Sun-Times:
A crystal ball? Sneed hears speculation is centering on Lt. Gov. Pat Quinnchoosing Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who is considered unassailable, to fill Obama’s Senate seat — if Quinn moves into the front office because of a Gov. Blago departure.
Ironically: Madigan is already eyeing a bid for governor, and Quinn would want to retain the office. Ain’t politics fun?

RSLC Applauds State Leaders Who Will Forgo 2009 Pay Increases
Last Updated on Wednesday, 10 December 2008 04:55 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 10 December 2008 04:54
For IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, December 10, 2008
– MANY REPUBLICANS ALREADY RETURNING PAY INCREASES, CUTTING BUDGETS –
ALEXANDRIA, VA – As state government leaders across the country are working to balance budgets due to the recent economic downturn, the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC), the nation’s largest caucus of Republican state leaders, today applauded elected officials who will forgo their 2009 pay increases that were set to take place in many states. Among others who have already done so, just this week Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett and Georgia lawmakers stated they would freeze their salaries and not take 2009 cost-of-living increases.
“The people of America are facing tough times and having to readjust their personal budgets, and they expect their state government officials to do the same,” said RSLC President Scott Ward. “It is encouraging that many state leaders across the country have taken this step already, such as Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett and the Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell, we hope and believe that more will recognize the need to do the same.”

For IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, December 9, 2008
– RSLC CALLS ON STATE LEADERS IN ILLINOIS TO URGE BLAGOJEVICH TO RESIGN IMMEDIATELY –
ALEXANDRIA, VA – With the indictment of Governor Rod Blagojevich of Illinois today, the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC), urged Illinois state legislative leaders to call for his immediate resignation.
“There is no place for an individual who has been elected and put in the public trust to remain in office under these circumstances,” said RSLC President Scott Ward. “Blagojevich ran on ending political corruption and has failed the people of his state. If the Governor does not resign on his own, we urge state legislative leaders to call for his resignation or begin impeachment proceedings immediately.”

Last Updated on Monday, 8 December 2008 04:51 Written by rslcpol Monday, 8 December 2008 04:21
For IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, December 8, 2008
– FEDERAL LEADERS ENCOURAGED TO LISTEN TO STATE LEADERS FOR MOST HELPFUL SOLUTIONS FOR ECONOMIC RECOVERY –
ALEXANDRIA, VA – With the recent economy recovery announcement by President-elect Barack Obama and the multi-billion dollar proposal by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC), the nation’s largest caucus of Republican state leaders, encouraged federal leaders to listen to and work with state leaders of both parties to ensure that new infrastructure programs are implemented effectively.
“President-elect Obama started to lay the groundwork for his economic recovery plan and we encourage him to not only listen to the Governors but also the state legislative leaders who are closest to the people and the issues the states are facing,” said RSLC President Scott Ward. “In announcing his recovery plan, Obama said ‘We won’t do it the old Washington way. We won’t just throw the money at the problem.’ His new deal-type programs appear to be just that.”
Texas: Possible U.S. Senate Vacancy Gets the Early Birds Out
Last Updated on Friday, 5 December 2008 12:51 Written by rslcpol Friday, 5 December 2008 12:51
From Chron.com:
Even early birds can be long shots, which is probably the best way to characterize state Sen. Florence Shapiro’s anticipated campaign in next year’s anticipated special election for the U.S. Senate.
That would follow U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison’s anticipated resignation to make an anticipated race for governor against incumbent Rick Perry in 2010.
Those are a lot of what-ifs, but take the anticipation out of politics, and you lose much of the entertainment.

PA: New LG Faces Election Deadline
Last Updated on Friday, 5 December 2008 11:26 Written by rslcpol Friday, 5 December 2008 11:11
If you haven’t met the newest Republican Lieutenant Governor, and many haven’t since he was sworn in on Wednesday, you can learn more about him here. From the Times-Tribune:
Lt. Gov. Joseph Scarnati has until Wednesday to set a date for a special election to fill the vacant 29th District Senate seat centered in Schuylkill County.
The deadline is based on a 10-day timetable from Monday, when the seat became officially vacant. That was the first day of the term to which the late Sen. James J. Rhoades of Mahanoy City was elected posthumously by voters Nov. 4. Mr. Rhoades died in October of injuries sustained in a traffic accident.
Mr. Scarnati discussed his role in the pending special election shortly after he took the oath of office Wednesday as lieutenant governor.

Nevada LG Indicted Over College Savings Program
Last Updated on Thursday, 4 December 2008 11:37 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 4 December 2008 11:31
There are some folks in Nevada politics who like to play for keeps. If Krolicki’s name is cleared in this matter – his opponents (U.S. Senator Harry Reid, Dem AG Catherine Cortez Masto, and Dem Treasurer Kate Marshall) will have created a much stronger politcal opponent than if they’d just let Krolicki alone. From RGJ.com:
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A grand jury has indicted Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki on charges stemming from his management of a multibillion-dollar college savings program in his previous position as Nevada’s state treasurer.
The Clark County grand jury indictment handed up Tuesday names Krolicki and his former chief of staff in the treasurer’s office, Kathryn Besser.
The indictment accuses Krolicki of two counts of misappropriation and falsification of accounts by a public officer, and two counts of misappropriation by a treasurer.
