VA: Newsflash – Recounts Rarely Change Election Results

From the Franklin News Post:

Three years ago in the race for attorney general, Republican Bob McDonnell was certified the winner over Democrat Creigh Deeds after the recount, which added 37 votes to McDonnell’s victory total of 360 votes.

McDonnell won with the closet margin in a statewide election in Virginia. About 2 million votes were cast in the race for attorney general. Both McDonnell and Deeds are running for governor in next year’s election. There was also a recount in the 1989 governor’s race between Democrat Douglas Wilder and Republican Marshall Coleman.

House Dems Want to Send $500 Billion to States

From the New York Times:

The National Conference of State Legislatures joined the governors in appealing to Congress for swift action. “States are cutting their budgets, freezing hiring and delaying capital projects,” said Joe Hackney, a Democrat who is speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives and president of the conference. “This can accelerate the downturn in our national economy.”

Mr. Douglas said he feared the recession would have “a cascading effect” on states: “Economic activity declines, investment is lower, the number of jobs decreases, income tax receipts are down, and so state fiscal pictures begin to deteriorate.”

MS: GOP LG May Run for Governor in 2011

Republicans do have a deep bench in Mississippi…and Democrats have a damaged splintered bench.  Remember Jamie Franks?  What about Jim HoodMike Moore anyone?  Yes, it will be interesting to watch just who Mississippi Democrats dredge up to run for Governor in 2011.  From the North East Mississippi Daily Journal:

Still, there is considerable talk about who will run for governor. Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant said recently in Hattiesburg that he might consider a run for the state’s top post in 2011 to succeed Haley Barbour, who is constitutionally prohibited from running for a third term. There has also been speculation that Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, Treasurer Tate Reeves, former Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck and outgoing U.S. Rep. Chip Pickering might vie for the open seat.

There is a pattern with all of the above-mentioned candidates. They are all Republicans and there are others who would be legitimate candidates, such as Auditor Stacey Pickering.

It takes a little imagination and creativity to ascertain the names of potential Democratic candidates for governor.

OK: LG Not Needed for Tiebreakers, Still Plans to ‘Lead Senate at Times’

This article has just the slightest hint of whining and political gamesmanship.  Thankfully, Republican Majority Leader Glenn Coffee is above the antics demonstrated by Oklahoma’s state senate Democrats.  Whining is such an unattractive trait for folks who claim to be leaders.  From NewsOK:

“I still believe that should I choose to want to preside that that opportunity is still available,” Askins said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there are times this session when I do choose to preside.”

Askins, midway through her term, occasionally presided over the Senate the past two years when it was evenly divided and broke tie votes a handful of times. In Oklahoma, the lieutenant governor’s duties include being president of the Senate.

Nevada GOP LG Considers Challenge to Reid

From the Las Vegas Sun:

The next major race in Nevada, the one that started the day after the election, will be the most expensive, most watched and most vitriolic contest in state history: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s bid for a fifth term.

National Republicans are plotting to erase Reid from the Club of 100, and last week the first prospective candidate dipped his toes into the water. Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki told the Associated Press he is mulling a bid against Reid, an announcement that surely made Democrats guffaw because of Krolicki’s ensnarement in a financial controversy soon after he left the state treasurer’s office. We can only hope, Democrats surely were whispering.

I guarantee Harry Reid was not among them.

NY: Former LG now Governor Won’t Take Senate Seat; Wants to Run for Re-election

From Newsday.com:

Paterson moved into the executive mansion in March after the resignation of Eliot Spitzer amid a prostitution scandal. Paterson on Monday recalled the turmoil surrounding Spitzer’s departure, saying, “I wouldn’t want to put the state through that again.”

If Paterson were to move to Washington, he would be succeeded by the State Senate majority leader — Sen. Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) currently holds the post — because there is no lieutenant governor. Paterson has the sole authority to appoint Clinton’s replacement if she were to decide to leave Congress.

TN: Now in Control – Republicans Seek to be Business Friendly

Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey and Representative Jason Mumpower – two outstanding Tennessee leaders, and in truth two of America’s future leaders – America’s farm team.  From KnoxNews:

In the short term, the Republican takeover of the Tennessee General Assembly probably will have only incidental impact on the state’s established pro-business environment.

In the long term, the GOP gains could be significant by providing a stable climate that is hostile toward legislation business interests consider undesirable and, eventually could expand tax incentives and the like.

Or so says Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, who perhaps deserves more credit than any other individual for bringing the Legislature under solid Republican control. House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower would be runner-up for that distinction.
