Last Updated on Monday, 10 November 2008 03:21 Written by rslcpol Monday, 10 November 2008 03:19
From Stateline.org:
Republicans for the first time in history will control both houses in Tennessee and Oklahoma, after both chambers in Tennessee and the lower house in Oklahoma moved into the GOP column. Both states, though, have Democratic governors.
Colorado is poised to become the first state to have black lawmakers leading both legislative chambers.
The Alabama Legislature, in Democratic hands since 1872, continues its streak as the legislature held the longest by either party in any state. Close behind, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi have been under Democratic control for more than a century.

National Wave Can’t Help Tennessee Dems; GOP Gets Majority in House and Senate
Last Updated on Wednesday, 5 November 2008 11:59 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 5 November 2008 11:59
From Chattanooga Free Times Press:
Democrats currently occupy the positions, which are elected by the legislature. The constitutional officers collectively control more than 1,000 positions in areas ranging from state auditing functions to bond finance, business incorporations and fundraising by charities.
“We have a constitutional majority so it is time to have new constitutional officers,” said Rep. Mumpower, R-Bristol. “I think there are people who can serve ably in those positions that we will have confidence in as representative and senators.”
Rep. Mumpower’s comments came as Tennessee Republicans and Democrats pondered the aftermath of Tuesday’s elections. The national wave that lifted Democratic presidential candidate Barak Obama to victory Tuesday night left Tennessee Democrats floundering.

MO: Big Money Flows Into Fight Over Casino Losses
Last Updated on Thursday, 16 October 2008 09:40 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 16 October 2008 09:40
From STLToday:
Campaign reports filed Wednesday show that Pinnacle Entertainment has contributed just under $7 million and Ameristar has donated almost $4.4 million in support of Proposition A. Ameristar operates casinos in St. Charles and Kansas City. Pinnacle has two casinos in downtown St. Louis and one under construction in south St. Louis County.
The donations dwarfed those collected by the state’s candidates on the Nov. 4 ballot, despite the elimination in late August of the state’s campaign donation limits.
The Democratic candidate for governor, Attorney General Jay Nixon, reported two large donations during the three-month period ending Sept. 30: $1 million from the Democratic Governor’s Association and $500,000 from the labor union AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees).

ACORN Fraud in Missouri?
Last Updated on Thursday, 9 October 2008 09:55 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 9 October 2008 09:55
From Yahoo! News:
In April, eight ACORN workers in St. Louis city and county pleaded guilty to federal election fraud for submitting false registration cards for the 2006 election. U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway said they submitted cards with false addresses and names, and forged signatures.
Ordower said Wednesday that ACORN registered about 53,500 people in Missouri this year. He believes his group is being targeted because some politicians don’t want that many low-income people having a voice.
“It’s par for the course,” he said. “When you’re doing more registrations than anyone else in the country, some don’t want low-income people being empowered to vote. There are pretty targeted attacks on us, but we’re proud to be out there doing the patriotic thing getting people registered to vote.”
Republicans are among ACORN’s loudest critics. At a campaign stop in Bethlehem, Pa., supporters of John McCain interrupted his remarks Wednesday by shouting, “No more ACORN.”
