MO: Fred Thompson Campaigns For LG Kinder
Last Updated on Thursday, 18 September 2008 03:48 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 18 September 2008 10:20
That was probably a good Pete Kinder event to go to. Former U.S. Senator and GOP Presidential candidate Fred Thompson can give a pretty good stump speech with a southern drawl. Not as good as South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster, but close. From The Joplin Globe:
Actor and former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, in Joplin on Wednesday stumping for Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, said he’ll be spending much of the remaining election season on the campaign trail for the John McCain-Sarah Palin ticket.
Speaking prior to a fund-raiser for the Kinder campaign, Thompson said McCain is the best choice because the country “needs leadership we really know in these dangerous times.”
Kinder had endorsed Thompson earlier this year when he sought the Republican presidential nod. That campaign ended in January after Thompson finished third in the South Carolina presidential primary.

VT: Poll Has Deployed GOP LG Ahead
Last Updated on Thursday, 18 September 2008 04:18 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 17 September 2008 04:32
We told you about Lieutenant Governor Brian Dubie’s deployment in the Gulf here. The poll has him up 16 points.
From WCAX:
A Channel 3 News Poll shows a quarter of Vermont voters are still undecided on the Lt. Governor’s race.
Incumbent Republican Brian Dubie leads the way with support from 45 percent of the voters. Democrat Tom Costello is at 29 percent. But a quarter of the voters remain undecided.
Those numbers very closely mirror Dubie’s favorability ratings; 46 percent have a positive opinion of Dubie, more than half of the voters have a negative impression of Dubie or no opinion at all.

TN: After Having her Primary Victory Overturned, Dem State Senator Files as Write-In
Last Updated on Tuesday, 16 September 2008 10:33 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 16 September 2008 10:33
From the Leaf Chronicle:
State Sen. Rosalind Kurita has filed paperwork to become a write-in candidate in November’s election, days after the state Democratic Party executive committee invalidated her August primary win over Tim Barnes.
“My people in my counties deserve to be able to elect their own senator,” Kurita said. “The fact is, they elected me, and I’m not going to quit on them.”
Monday was the last day to file write-in applications. State party elders ruled this weekend that August’s election results, certified by election commissions in each of District 22’s three counties, were “incurably uncertain.”
According to election results, Kurita received a 19-vote majority out of more than 8,930 voters. She won a majority of voters only in Cheatham County; Barnes carried Montgomery and Houston counties.

NC: Democrat May Cash In; Ethics Law Violated?
Last Updated on Tuesday, 16 September 2008 10:08 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 16 September 2008 10:08
From Charlotte Observer:
Two other politicians recently recused themselves from voting on legislation that could impact real estate holdings, however.
Republican lieutenant governor candidate Robert Pittenger, a former state senator, owns 2,000 acres along proposed parkway routes. Pittenger, of Charlotte, recused himself from voting on two bills relating to the N.C. Turnpike Authority because he said he was worried about a conflict.
This legislative session, State Rep. Skip Stam, a Wake County Republican, recused himself from voting on the state budget bill because it contained money for a toll road south of Raleigh. Stam, an attorney, said he has relatives and clients that own land along the road’s route.
Hoyle’s opponent for re-election, Kathy Harrington, said she wouldn’t have voted for turnpike bills if she owned land near a proposed exit.
“It appears it would have benefited him financially,” said Harrington, a Republican. “It was unethical of him to have done so.”

TN: Dem “Good Ol’ Boys” Negate Election Result
Last Updated on Monday, 15 September 2008 12:35 Written by rslcpol Monday, 15 September 2008 10:29
From the Nashville City Paper:
The Good Ol’ Boys still run the Tennessee Democratic Party, and on Saturday they got together in the figurative smoky back room and did their best to end the career of their party’s highest-ranking woman.
State Sen. Rosalind Kurita saw her narrow election victory essentially taken from her Saturday at a downtown Nashville hotel as members of the Tennessee Democratic Party Executive Committee met to try and decide the fate of her 19-vote victory over challenger Tim Barnes.
The party executive committee didn’t have the outright courage to hand the election to Barnes based off the challenger’s razor-thin body of evidence that there were enough irregularities in the 22nd District Democratic Senate primary to overturn the results. Instead, the body voted 33 to 11 to send the decision on whether or not to overturn the primary — and hand it to Barnes — to a board of the executive committees of the county parties in the district.

MO: LG Candidates Clash at Debate
Last Updated on Monday, 15 September 2008 10:23 Written by rslcpol Monday, 15 September 2008 10:23
From STLtoday:
Republican incumbent Peter Kinder and Democrat Sam Page, a state representative, clashed on Sunshine Law, health care, public funding for stadiums and the Tour of Missouri, the bicycle race that ends in St. Louis this weekend.
Kinder went on the offensive in his opening statement, criticizing Page for what he called an inconsistent stance on Sunshine Law.
At issue is a Sunshine Law request filed by Creve Coeur city councilwoman Laura Bryant in which she sought records from Page’s office regarding ethics complaints he filed against her and another council person. Bryant was in the audience during the debate. The ethics complaints were dismissed by the Missouri Ethics Commission.
Kinder alleged that Page had refused to respond to that request.

VT: New Sex Offender Laws are Likely
Last Updated on Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:34 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 11 September 2008 10:18
From Bennington Banner:
Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie, both Republicans, called for a special legislative session to immediately pass legislation that would implement longer prison terms and civil confinement, which would extend jail time for high-risk offenders who have completed their sentences but have not successfully completing sex-offender treatment. Democratic leaders in the Legislature resisted, however, favoring an approach that would allow lawmakers to hear from experts and the public.
Sears said any new legislation must first be discussed in committee, but added that longer mandatory minimum sentences would likely be utilized in a way that gives prosecutors flexibility and discretion. Offenders could face the longer sentence in “particularly egregious” crimes,” he said.

Republican Lt. Governor Brian Dubie continues to do an outstanding job serving the people of Vermont. From the Burlington Free Press:
Vermont Democrats picked Tom Costello of Brattleboro over Nate Freeman of Northfield as their candidate to try to unseat incumbent Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie in the November election.
“This is going to be a great crusade,” said a happy Costello, speaking from the Democratic Party headquarters in Burlington, where he had come to await results after a dawn-to-dusk day spent greeting voters outside polling places in the city.
