RICHMOND – Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling will seek re-election next year, two people familiar with his campaign said.

Bolling intends to announce his plans in an early afternoon Capitol Square news conference.

Bolling’s decision not to run for governor combined with former Governor George Allen’s announcement to sit out the governor’s race leaves Attorney General Bob McDonnell uncontested for the Republican nomination.

NY: Former Gov. Spitzer’s Replacement Admits Affair

With his predecessor’s term doomed by a sex scandal, brand-new Gov. David Paterson tried to come clean about his own skeletons just hours after assuming office by acknowledging a years-old affair.

Paterson was sworn in almost exactly a week after allegations first surfaced that former Gov. Eliot Spitzer was “Client 9” of a high-priced call girl service. Responding to rumors circulating in Albany, Paterson and his wife, Michelle, told the Daily News of New York City that both had affairs during a rough patch in their marriage several years ago.

“This was a marriage that appeared to be going sour at one point,” Paterson told the Daily News. “But I went to counseling and we decided we wanted to make it work. Michelle is well aware of what went on.”

MS: GOP Returns Scruggs Money…

All $27,250 of it. Question is, Will huge Jim Hood supporters Democratic Attorneys General Association return the $300,000 it got from Scruggs? Jim Hood certainly isn’t taking this opportunity to rise above the fray and call for all players in this sad story be above reproach. No, he’s still playing political defense – showing a true tin ear to the popular sentiment that is emerging in Mississippi on this issue.

There’s more turmoil in the wake of Attorney Richard “Dickie” Scruggs pleading guilty to conspiring to bribe a judge last week. The well-financed attorney has made several large donations to organizations and political groups around the state. One political group is distancing themselves from the corruption investigation, by giving that money away.

Richard “Dickie” Scruggs made three sizable contributions to the Mississippi Republican Party between 2002 and 2004.

The story has truly gone national, here’s just a few we saw:

NY: Lawmakers React To New Gov’s Speech

Who remembers the team building spirit of Eliot Spitzer’s inaugural address in January of 2007 when he said:”Like Rip Van Winkle, the legendary character created by New York author Washington Irving, New York has slept through much of the past decade while the rest of the world has passed us by,” while outgoing Governor George Pataki sat nearby. Nice touch of class by Mr. Spitzer. Thankfully, it appears Mr. Paterson has shown some restraint in his inaugural remarks.

– Former Gov. George Pataki: “Whenever New York has faced a challenge or a difficult time we come together. And David Paterson is the type of person who will work well to bring people together. We have to put aside politics and partisanship and work in the public’s interest.”

– Attorney General Andrew Cuomo: “Gov. David Paterson … has the experience, skills and personality needed to lead this state. The recent negative developments on Wall Street serve to illustrate that significant challenges lie ahead. The governor is exactly right: We must all work together to move this state forward.”

– Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco, R-Schenectady: “His leadership skills are needed – and will be tested – more than ever, as New York struggles with a nearly $5 billion budget deficit, some of the nation’s highest property taxes, an economy – especially upstate – that is hurting and a state fiscal deadline of April 1 that is upon us.”

NY: LG Paterson Drops the ‘L’ and becomes Governor (and what that means for Albany)

And how could this affect that other statewide elected democrat? Well if you ask the Wall Street Journal, it could open the door for Attorney General Cuomo.

And who are the other “winners and losers” of this whole mess? At least one paper takes a look

Oh, and apparently the soon-to-be former Governor will skip the inauguration

ALBANY — Incoming Gov. David A. Paterson is at the Capitol this morning preparing to take the oath of office this afternoon as Albany gets back to the business of governing following last week’s sex scandal revelations involving Gov. Eliot L. Spitzer.

Paterson, who is legally blind, is expected to give a relatively brief address that he has committed to memory at 1 p.m. to a joint session of the State Legislature and to a who’s who of the state’s political elite, including the state’s congressional delegation and local government leaders.
