MUNCIE — Indiana could pay a price for joining the ethanol gold rush at a bad time.Ethanol production capacity has expanded so rapidly in the United States that there are likely to be some plant shutdowns, cheap resales, consolidations and bankruptcies, an expert says.

Barbara Lawton was in Green Bay Thursday talking about a confidential, free, online depression screening program.”Without access to mental health care, we have a tremendous drag on our economy,” she said. “Across the nation it is to the tune of $90 billion a year lost. This is lost in days of work, lost in productivity level, and higher medical costs.”

Virginia Republican leaders stopped in Roanoke on Monday as part of a statewide tour designed to counter Democratic attacks and protect their majorities in the upcoming General Assembly elections.
U.S. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, Attorney General Bob McDonnell, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, Senate Majority Leader Walter Stosch, House Speaker William Howell and Virginia Republican Party Chairman John Hager spent 40 minutes at Roanoke Regional Airport elaborating on the achievements of the state Republican Party and the dangers that could threaten the state if Democrats win the Virginia Senate this fall.

LITTLE ROCK If Lt. Gov. Bill Halter’s push for a state lottery to fund college scholarships is successful, Arkansas will follow 42 other states into the lottery business a business some say is past its peak.
True to the biggest promise from his successful 2006 campaign, Halter is seeking to place a proposed constitutional amendment to create a state-run lottery on Arkansas’ 2008 general election ballot, after failing this year to persuade the Legislature to refer the measure to the people.

Outgoing Gov. Mike Easley says he’s not interested in the Senate. Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue and Treasurer Richard Moore both want to succeed Easley. Attorney General Roy Cooper wants to keep his current gig. U.S. Rep. Brad Miller likes his increased stature in the Democratic-led House.
