Campaigning and Governing Are Two Different Things

Ohio’s Democrat Attorney General Marc Dann is having a hard time
matching his campaign trail rhetoric with his record as an office holder.

About
a third of the lawyers
that Attorney General Marc Dann has brought on to
represent the state have donated to his political campaigns, a Dispatch analysis shows.

Of the 151 lawyers green-lighted by
Dann as part of a new process designed to end "pay-to-play" in the
awarding of legal contracts, 51 have given to Dann's campaigns for state Senate
and attorney general, according to information provided by the attorney general's
office this week. Their political contributions to Dann, a Democrat, total
$29,814.

Also, 18 of the lawyers have donated
to the Ohio Democratic Party and Democratic campaign funds since 2005, the
analysis of campaign-finance data found. Their party contributions total
$71,230 since 2005.

Dann ran last year on a platform of ridding state government of political corruption. Among other things, he accused former attorneys general Betty D. Montgomery and Jim Petro, both Republicans, of trading legal contracts for campaign contributions.

Read on in the Columbus
Post Dispatch’s
piece to see how truly blind and bi-partisan
these awards are.

Can you imagine if his campaign rhetoric matched his governing
rhetoric
– he never would’ve won election.  Oh well –
the cameras continue to roll.

Mississippi: First Ad of the '07 AG Season?

The folks down at Y’all Politics

Yowza!

Now this is New York Politics

Democrat Governor Eliot Spitzer, Republican State Senate Majority
Leader Joseph Bruno, and Democrat Attorney General Andrew Cuomo are in a
scrum.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo will
seek access to a wide range of State Police records, including e-mails and
other correspondence with Gov. Spitzer's top advisers, as he investigates
whether political espionage was committed against Majority Leader Joseph Bruno…
Meanwhile, Spitzer, who a Long Island Republican senator claimed last week had
called the 78-year-old Bruno an "old, senile, piece of s- – -,"
insisted yesterday that he does "like" and "respect" Bruno,
calling him "a superb public servant."…

A superb story that really captures the happiness that is New York’s
Democrat Governor.

MS LG Race Update

The position of Lieutenant Governor in the State of Mississippi is one
of the most powerful L.G. offices in the country – and the open seat is
proving to be one of the most critical L.G. races of the cycle.  Here’s
a take on the race on the issue of open government from the Associated
Press
:

How open is Mississippi government?
The 2007 statewide elections will help answer that question for the next four
years.

The lieutenant governor’s race
is particularly important because the winner will preside over the state
Senate, appoint committee chairmen and assign bills to committees —
powers that give Mississippi’s second-highest elected official great
leeway in deciding the fate of every policy proposal at the Capitol.

The lieutenant governor’s
contest is wide open because the incumbent, Republican
Amy Tuck
, is term-limited and could not seek re-election.

Three candidates are jostling to
succeed Tuck. State Auditor Phil Bryant
and state Sen. Charlie Ross, both of
Brandon, are competing for the Republican nomination. The winner of the Aug. 7
primary will face Democratic
state Rep. Jamie Franks
of Mooreville in the Nov. 6 general election.

Spreading Rumors: MT LG to Get The Boot?

From Montana political blog The Hardliner:

It seems there's a movement afoot
among Democratic Party insiders to oust Lt. Gov. John Bohlinger in favor of a
Democrat with a more progressive pedigree. Some Democrat operatives cringed
when Bohlinger was placed on the ticket four years ago… Read the rest of the post

Future Leaders: Just "Dew"hurst it!

That’s a painful pun – but why not?

Texas Republican Lieutenant
Governor David H. Dewhurst
has the perfect combination one looks for in a
statewide candidate.  That’s why he was resoundingly elected in his
first bid at ANY elected office as Texas Land Commissioner in 1998 – that’s
a statewide post folks.

4 years later he ran and won a competitive contest of Lieutenant
Governor, and scared off any credible opponents in his re-election in 2006.
And it’s only natural that Dewhurst is being talked
about
as a potential gubernatorial hopeful in the Lone Star State in
2010.

KY Dem AG Candidate Jack Conway – Over the Top

Kentucky Democrat A.G. Candidate Jack Conway apparently is a fan of Bobby Kennedy
and appears to be equating himself with Bobby Kennedy.  In this video Jack says that like
Bobby Kennedy, he’s a dreamer…Jack asks “why not?” just
like Bobby Kennedy used to end his speeches to exhort people to do more with
their lives.  It’s really sweet that Jack Conway is trying to make
all those smart Kentucky voters think he’s just like Bobby Kennedy.
I mean, look at Bobby
Kennedy’s record and legacy
:

He served his nation as seaman in the United States Navy, played
football and graduated from Harvard University, continued his service to the
country as United States Attorney General where he made the fight against
corruption and organized crime a cornerstone of his tenure, served as President
John F. Kennedy’s most trusted advisors during the Cuban Missile Crisis,
and is viewed by many as a great contributor to Civil Rights in
this country.  In addition to all of this, Bobby Kennedy served in the
United States Senate, and sought his party’s nomination for the
Presidency of the United States before being assassinated in 1968.

Now, take a look at Jack Conway’s long and distinguished career:

A failed campaign for United States Congress in 2002, legal counsel to
the Cabinet Secretary under Democrat Governor Paul Patton (where he takes credit for
every single thing the Governor did that was positive), political appointee, a
private attorney, and lastly a Congressional aide.  Oh, and he wants to be
Governor someday, it appears.

Hmmm…Jack Conway…Bobby Kennedy…Jack Conway….Bobby
Kennedy…Jack Con…from the looks of it I think we can safely say
that Jack Conway is no Bobby Kennedy.  This is like channeling Eleanor
Roosevelt, or maybe even Lloyd
Bentsen
for Pete’s sake.  I’m not sure the comparison is
well taken.

When AGs Go Bad – Ohio's Democrat Attorney General

Ohio Democrat Attorney General Mark Dann apparently let his anger and
the eager anticipation of hobnobbing with Illinois U.S. Senator Barack Obama
get the better of him when he lashed out at a local reporter
(there’s video!) over an article that was written about Dann’s daughter last
week.

Dann surprised many observers in November ’06 when he defeated
former Ohio Attorney General and State Auditor Betty Montgomery. In some
circles it was heard that Dann was as surprised as many of the more seasoned
political observers by his upset victory. He’s had lots of time to
get used to being in the spotlight, and to learn there are just sometimes you
should just hold back your true feelings (maybe he should take some cues from
his friend Senator Obama), and to make sound judgments – but this episode
(and there’s
even video we said!)
and some others show that the Democrat A.G. just hasn’t
quite gelled into that mature office holder that voters hoped he would.

Here are some of the latest headlines generated by the Dann machine
that conjure up maturity, ready for primetime, and sound judgment:

Locals With Ties to Dann Get Jobs

Attorney General Marc Dann curses reporter outside Obama even
Dann Fires Aide Who Killed Man in ‘75
Dann’s Evidence Handler Led Shoddy Township Operation

Attorney General Fires His Top Cop

And what’s really great about this, is this guy ran on a huge
anti-corruption platform.

Who knows, maybe he envisioned himself like Robert Redford’s “Bill
McKay” in the political campaign classic
The Candidate
.
But I think that the end is of the movie is where Marc Dann really could’ve
identified with Redford’s character – after they win and Redford’s
“McKay” looks at one the campaign staffers and says, with a great
deer in the headlights look, “now what?”

Ah – those Dann folks were going to clean up Ohio…
